About the Author

Bill Wilson was born in Bordertown, South Australia, in 1937. His early years were spent on his grandparents’ farm in Apsley, Victoria. When the farm was sold in 1940, his parents moved to Mitcham, in Adelaide Hills where Bill commenced his schooling. They moved back to Bordertown during the World War II-era of 1944-5. When Bill Wilson Senior returned from Royal Australian Air Force duties after WW2, the family moved back to Adelaide where Bill completed his education.
Having decided at an early age that he wanted to be a teacher, he graduated from Adelaide Teachers College in 1956. Bill was subsequently appointed to Alice Springs Higher Primary School. He spent the next two years in the Northern Territory, before returning to schools in South Australia. Eventually, he became a demonstration teacher at Sturt Street in Adelaide. He met Elaine Stevens in 1963, and they got married in 1964. Their three children were born over the next seven years.
Bill left teaching in 1965 to take over his father’s farm at Mount Compass, where he designed and built his first house. In 1970, Bill returned to teaching and was soon promoted to Deputy Principal of the Oaklands Primary School in 1974. While in Adelaide, he achieved a degree in education, as well as two graduate diplomas.
In 1976, Bill designed and built another house at Glenalta in Adelaide Hills. The family lived there till 1987. Bill got promoted to Principal of the Hackham South Primary School in 1980 and then transferred as Principal to the Loxton North Primary School in 1988. Another house was built on the fruit property that Bill and Elaine had purchased right next to the school.
Bill took early retirement in 1992 to manage the horticultural property. Over the next 20 years, Bill became heavily involved in cultivating wine grapes and irrigation management. He spent ten years as a Director of the Central Irrigation Trust, and an even longer period as Chairman of the Loxton Irrigation District Management Committee. Bill also became Chairman of the South Australian Drought Task Force for the River Murray, and a counsellor with the National Rural Financial Counselling Service during the ‘Ten-Year Drought.’ In April of 2003, he was awarded the Centenary Medal by the Governor-General of Australia for outstanding service to the community, the irrigation industry, and the environment
Now, Bill spends much of his time painting in his art studio and hitting a little white ball around the golf course.
