Overview
The occasion for which André Campra's Requiem mass was composed is unknown. Various recordings of the work exist, most of them with a more or less splendid atmosphere in keeping with the fact that Campra was for many years music director at Notre-Dame Cathedral and also worked at the only slightly less imposing Chapelle Royale at Versailles. However, the notes here sketch out an alternative hypothesis, namely that the work was written for a funeral at a small Jesuit church in Paris. It is not clear whether Ensemble Correspondances and its director, Sébastien Daucé, were following this hypothesis. The smaller forces here are similar to what they have used on other recordings, but the fact is that the smaller size works. The work's tone takes on an intimate quality, with the small vocal forces (about a dozen singers) seeming to have a consoling flavor. In fact, the smaller group is a bit underpowered when combined with the 20-member orchestra, and even more so in the other work on the album, the Missa sex vocum of François Cosset, which seems clearly to have been written with larger dimensions in mind. Yet this work is almost unknown, as is much of the Parisian sacred tradition of the 17th century, and it is good to have a recording. Daucé and Ensemble Correspondances have a uniquely warm sound that is flawlessly executed here, and lovers of this repertory or this group will doubtless enjoy the album greatly. Listeners should note that the track ordering is different on the physical album and in at least some streaming versions, where the Campra mass comes first; the online versions may be preferable. ~ James Manheim
