Description: This how-to manual introduces a wide range of procedures commonly performed by practicing anesthesiologists. It is an update of a book originally published in 2007.
Purpose: While the authors do not specifically say so, it seems clear that their goal is to offer a beginners' guide to anesthesia procedures. Through their richly illustrated sections, the authors have created a nice atlas of these procedures.
Audience: The primary audience is medical students beginning their clinical clerkships who have had little or no experience in the placement of invasive devices and catheters. Anesthesia residents and more advanced students are more likely to benefit from the sections on regional blocks and echocardiography, which offer clear descriptions and excellent illustrations of the techniques.
Features: The book covers the insertion of lines (central and peripheral), airway management tools and techniques, regional anesthesia, advanced invasive monitors, and tricks to look good as a student or resident in anesthesia. The figures are especially clear and could be used by teaching faculty to illustrate techniques to students and residents before they actually work on patients. The depth of coverage is (intentionally) not great, so it is unlikely that experienced providers would come back and use the book as a reference once they've mastered the skills.
Assessment: Because of the great progress in many of the technical skills used in anesthesia in the past few years (especially in the areas of airway management and ultrasound-guided line and block placements), this second edition is a timely revision. Like the first edition, it is likely to be well received by the next generation of anesthesia trainees.
