Apparitions is a photography project about buildings that that have vanished from our cities. Ghosted pictures of these structures are combined with current photos of their former locations in single images, with informative text panels to outline the design aesthetics. This unique aesthetic approach provides an engaging way of telling stories of change in our built environments, exploring a wonderful historical narrative that commemorates architecture in space and time, a way to showcase the preservation of memory. National in scope and including a variety of building types, Apparitions comprises photographs from more than sixty cities across the United States.

About the Author

T. John Hughes has thirty years experience as a commercial architectural photographer and is a faculty member of the Art Institute of Colorado, in Denver, where he also specialized in photo history. In recent years, he has focused on fine art projects related to architecture; change over time; cinema; and abstraction. One of his best-known endeavors is the "Cityscape" Panorama Project." Begun in 1992 it is an ongoing every-five-year documentation of downtown Denver cityscapes and streetscapes taken from the same vantage points. He continues to teach one course at the University of Colorado Graduate School of Architecture.

Covering cities as far apart as Portland, OR, and Atlantic City, NJ, this volume overlays modern structures of glass and concrete on the historic architecture that once occupied its place. Some of the locales are expected—Boston, Detroit, Baltimore, San Francisco, and New York—but locations that don't typically call to mind architectural marvels are featured as well. Buildings in places such as Houston (the Shamrock Hotel); Galveston, TX (the Ursuline Academy); Buffalo, NY (Erie County Savings Bank); and more illustrate the evolution of the built environment in these cities. The diversity of places and types of structures represented (civic, residential, commercial, recreational) identify clearly the changing nature of urban (and even more, rural) life. Architectural photographer Hughes (Art Inst. of Colorado) turns the camera on towns of various sizes. By focusing on themes of alteration and the passage of time, he demonstrates that change is inevitable but also that reinvention is possible.
