"Teenage angst like you've never seen it before." -- MTV.com
Walker Callaghan doesn't know what happened to her. One minute she was living her teenage life in suburban Chicago...and the next minute, she was in a strange place and in a brand new school with absolutely no homework, no rules, and no consequences.
Walker Callaghan, 17, is dead.
She doesn't go to heaven or hell. She lands at The Academy, a middle realm where teenagers have one thing in common: They were the morning announcement at their high schools because they died young.
These high school kids are now caught in a strange “in-between” zone where life hasn’t changed very much. In fact, this special teen limbo looks a lot like life in a quaint Michigan town complete with jocks, popular girls and cliques. "There are even cheerleaders in death," Walker observes. It's not a coincidence that the music teacher is a guy named Kurt who "used to have this band." The drama teacher, Heath, is crush worthy because back in his life, he starred in some superhero movie.
Principal King explains the rules -- there are none. Why? You can't die twice.
There is no homework.
You're just there to learn because the human brain isn't fully formed until you're 24.
By the way, you can't get hurt physically, so race your Harley off that hillside. But falling in love is the most dangerous thing you can do ...because no one knows how long you'll stay in this realm or what's next.
"Losing someone you love would be like dying twice," Walker says.

Walker Callaghan has just arrived at the Academy after a tragic car accident. “Is this hell or is this high school?” she asks.
She finds out her new life is a bit of both as she falls in love with tat-covered, bad boy Daniel Reid who is about to break the only sacred rule of this place. He's looking for a portal to return back to the living realm.
He needs just one hour to retrieve his younger brother who strangely never arrived at The Academy. Bobby is an Earth Bound Spirit, stuck at a plane crash site that took both of their lives as their rich father piloted his private jet nose-first into a cornfield on Christmas Eve.
Walker loves Daniel and risks it all to go with him.
Have they learned enough to outsmart dangerous forces while transporting a young child with them? Can their love survive the fragmented evil parts of themselves that are now hunting them down as they try to find a way back to the middle?
At the Academy, you learn the lessons of an after-lifetime.

I remember picking up Ascenders and reading the synopsis and it instantly gave me Twilight feel but oh how I was wrong! Ascenders is breath taking and brilliant! C.L. Gaber has a way of writing such emotional feels throughout her story where you feel like you are Walker and Daniel. I have laughed and bawled my eyes out as you grow with Walker and Daniel relationship. When I first read this book I could not put it down because of all the cliff hangers Gaber left us with. You will never have a dull moment with her writing and she will have you thinking of this book constantly and all the turns it has ahead. I highly recommend Ascenders and all of the next books in this series. C.L. Gaber has become one of my favorite authors this year and now an instant buy author!
The love the world of the Academy that this story creates. Walker is so confused at first and when she figures it out, then her mom moves on, she is devastated. But Daniel is unable to remain aloof and saves Walker, who ends up helping Daniel meet his chief goal in afterlife.
Ascenders: High School for the Recently Departed (Ascenders Saga Book 1) By C.L. Gaber 5 Stars Ok so if this book doesn't get you thinking then I don't know but this was a really cool book. You have to open your mind, kinda like reading the Harry Potter series. This is my first by the author but won't be my last. I can't wait to read the rest of this series! “Did you know that the human brain doesn't fully form until you're 24-years-old?” Walker wakes up and finds that her and her Mother have moved, she has no memory of this move and doesn't understand how they could have this great house and all these new things when they struggled for money every day of their lives. She starts her new school, The Academy and finds things quite a bit different. There are no rules, no tests, no homework, and no consequences. It doesn't take long for Walker to realize that at 17 years old she has died. She is in a middle realm, an in between zone where in a lot of ways things are the same, yet so very different. She meets Daniel on her first day, he is gorgeous, reserved, and she can't help but be pulled towards him. As they spend some time together she learns that Daniel is planning something, he is going to break the one and only rule and that is to return to the living world to find his baby brother that died along with him and his other siblings and for some reason never made it to The Academy. Walker has fallen in love with Daniel and decides she will help him with all his research on how to do it and will go with him. Can they learn everything it's going to take to make this work? Can they overcome the forces that try to stop them from getting back safely? Will they find Daniel's little brother in time? This author has quite an imagination!! References to those we have lost that come to The Academy to teach are amazing, they actually made me smile and think wow that was well played lol. I can not wait to see where this story goes from here, I'm not normally a fan on YA Paranormal, but this grabbed me and won't let go. Read it you won't be sorry.
