Ashes: Book 1
It began to rain. The somber crowd pulled out their black umbrellas and opened them up. Many of them were crying, and the few who weren't were holding back tears.

There were too many graves. All of them looked exactly the same: small, square, and gray, with eerie blue words that seemed to glow.

The graves were all homes to young children who had mysteriously disappeared. No one know what had happened to any of them.

Soon, the grieving parents left until the graveyard was empty.

Later at midnight, a full moon rose and stars glimmered in the sky. And then the children rose from their graves.

One by one each ghost came out and formed a circle.

Then, once they were all there, they started to sing in one slow, eerie voice:

"Ring arounddddd the rooooosieeeee, pooooockets fuuuuull of pooooosieeeees, aaaaashes, aaaaashes, we alllll falllll dooooownnnnn..."

And then, they did just that: they fell down into the ground in ashes, and once more, rested in peace.

About the Author

Sanaya Das Pattanayak started writing Ashes with her best friends Charlotte, Jessica and Aubree, when she was only eleven years old. She lived in Virginia, with her parents and younger sister. Most of the time, her priorities were piano, math, singing, and tennis, so she never knew that she would end up writing a chapter book. Ashes is the first book that Sanaya has ever written and published. She is also the author of the upcoming book called, The Door of Realms, in case you wanted to read another book written by her. If you enjoyed Ashes, feel free to explore the other books written by Sanaya, Jessica, Charlotte, and Aubree.

Aubree Matthews was just eleven years old when she wrote this book with her friends. She lives with her parents and older sister, Kalee. She plans to be an author in the future, volunteering at animal shelters, or anything to help the environment when she has the time. Aubree spent most of her time after school doing competitive gymnastics or swimming while working on Ashes. In fifth grade, she won an essay contest against her class and won writing competitions in school. This is the first book she’s helped publish, but she’s currently working on two others, one called 7 stars and one called The Powers of the Tiki. And she’s coming up with many more ideas!

Charlotte Morse was just an eleven-year-old living in Virginia when she, her twin sister Jessica, and her best friends, Aubree and Sanaya, came together with the idea for Ashes and made it a reality. As a young child, Charlotte dreamed of being an author, and writing Ashes took her one step closer to realizing that dream. Charlotte Morse is also the author of the Morrangia series, which follows the adventures of five mythic kittens from each of the five tribes, brought together on a quest to save their world. She is also working on many other stories and series for kids.

Jessica Morse was eleven years old when she, her identical twin sister Charlotte, and her friends, Aubree and Sanaya wrote Ashes. She currently lives in Virginia with Charlotte, her older brother, her parents, and her three cats. Since writing Ashes, she has finished writing and publishing Stonewielders, a book about five kids who are the only ones able to use magical stones, so make sure to check it out on Barnes and Nobles Press.
