Description: Dr. Feldman and his group have put together a superb collection of chapters on Alzheimer's disease ranging from the history of the disease and major developments in the field to the latest treatment options in different stages of clinical trials.
Purpose: This atlas provides an easy-to-read update on about 20 years of impressive progress in learning why and how the brain degenerates.
Audience: Written by a group of leading clinicians and scientists in the field of dementia from the University of British Columbia, this atlas can serve well as a textbook for undergraduate or graduate level courses. It can also serve as a reference for physicians interested in understanding what causes Alzheimer's and how different medications target different steps in pathophysiology of this disease.
Features: The Scientific American style illustrations, though not of the highest quality printing, bring together the results of dozens of publications. Explanations are given in simple terms, but they reflect the latest updates from both the clinical and basic science angles in Alzheimer's disease.
Assessment: This is a good summary of a complicated topic, covering what brings about the plaques and tangles in Alzheimer's disease, along with how the disease can be prevented, diagnosed, and treated. Such a thorough and authoritative reference was needed for thousands of young scientists and clinicians interested in learning about Alzheimer's. I strongly recommend this to anyone who wants to understand the latest developments in the field of dementia.
