About the Author

Deirdre Kelly was born in Calcutta, India and educated in Ireland. She is a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin. She trained in adult gastroenterology and hepatology and paediatric hepatology in Ireland, the U K and the USA. She set up the Liver Unit at Birmingham Children's Hospital in 1989 and developed it into an international unit. Her special clinical interests are caring for children with all forms of liver disease, but especially viral hepatitis.

Her research interests include development of stem cell therapy, molecular genetics of inherited liver disease; treatment of viral hepatitis; immunosuppression and quality and outcome life following transplantation.

Description: This is an accessible and impactful book, providing a better understanding of liver disease in children. Curated paragraphs of information give a foothold to readers at all levels of training to appreciate and absorb the corresponding high-resolution images. Flow charts and graphs, used sparingly, condense key background information and the visuals consolidate readers' knowledge. For both tenured hepatologists looking for classic examples of rare pathologies and new learners hoping to familiarize themselves with basic visual findings, this atlas provides a sense of how pediatric liver disease looks in real life.
Purpose: The goal is to provide clinicians with key signs and symptoms of pediatric liver disease and to help direct them toward diagnosis and treatment with the use of visual aids. The authors point out in the foreword that, despite advanced tools in diagnosis and treatment, "the recognition of physical signs and symptoms of liver and other diseases remains an essential part of diagnosis, investigation and management." It is clear throughout the atlas how seriously they take this mission.
Audience: This atlas is intended for a broad audience, covering bread and butter topics in pediatric liver disease such as "the jaundiced baby" while also dedicating space to more specialized topics such as "intestinal transplantation" and "the child who needs a liver transplant." The authors suggest that physicians, trainees, and "those providing guidance to nurses and allied health professionals" will find this atlas useful. With classic examples of liver disease represented in high resolution images, the authors accomplish this goal.
Features: The 13 carefully delineated chapters, moving from birth to childhood and finally focusing on transplantation, are supported by a thorough index that makes finding needed images quick and easy. Each carefully selected and high-yield topic within a chapter is illuminated by four to five precisely chosen images. The authors demonstrate that no visual is off limits if it means improving readers' understanding of a particular disease. Selected figures may draw from radiology, histology, gross pathology, intraoperative/postoperative images, key physical exam findings, and novel illustrations. The diversity of visual aids works effectively to prevent learner fatigue.
Assessment: The mission of the book to take readers out of the book and pair important clinical pearls with striking visual aids enables knowledge sink in more profoundly than a traditional textbook. It is one thing to read about the stages of surgical repair expected in a combined liver/small bowel transplant and another to see that depicted in a high-resolution photographic series. For trainees where these types of transplants may not be performed, it will provide an indelible association and allow for better consolidation of knowledge. At the same time, practicing hepatologists may appreciate key examples such as the classic findings of progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis seen on immunochemical staining. Another strength is the atlas's approachability. While the topics it covers are quite thorough, the atlas is lightweight and can live just as easily in a book bag as it can on a shelf. The selected visuals are buttressed by carefully allocated text which often does not exceed more than a paragraph or two, making the atlas easy to use. While the wide array of visuals makes this atlas stand out, at times some images repeat and they are not always specific; for instance, scleral icterus is shown in a child with Crigler Najjar type 2 and in another child with seronegative hepatitis. While the book is geared for clinicians at all stages of their careers, it also assumes some medical background and understanding of medical abbreviations such as "VLCFA" "GSD" and "NPC" seen on a flow chart depicting the work-up of splenomegaly. Despite this atlas's dedication to directing management in pediatric liver disease, clinicians actively managing these patients are likely to go for more all-encompassing source material. These are minor issues in a book that is otherwise extremely user-friendly, comprehensive, and evocative. Reading through this atlas, I have strengthened my knowledge on a number of key pathologies in childhood liver disease. I have also found a supporting work that I can readily draw on to consolidate my understanding moving forward. Indeed, this book gives color to pediatric liver disease, making learning a more vibrant and enjoyable experience.
