Description: This is a collection of photomicrographs with concise descriptions of common H&E stained frozen sections skin and skin cancers designed specifically for students of Mohs surgery and pathologists who interpret frozen section H&E stained tissue specimens of the integument.
Purpose: The authors' objective was to present high-quality H&E stained frozen section photomicrographs of malignant and nonmalignant integumentary components (e.g. basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis, etc.). There are other compendiums on the topic, but this is the most complete and highest quality example I have reviewed.
Audience: The ideal audience for this book is beginning Mohs micrographic surgeons, pathologists needing added education in frozen section interpretation of integumentary structures, and dermatology residents assisting in a Mohs surgery clinic. The three authors are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in cutaneous oncology.
Features: The book is very focused and straightforward. Topics include normal anatomy and the most common skin cancers treated by dermatologists. It also covers challenging differentials that are uniquely encountered by Mohs surgeons (e.g. differentiating between seborrheic keratosis, actinic keratosis, and squamous cell carcinoma on a tangential frozen section of skin). The most notable feature of the book is the extensive number of high-quality photomicrographs. The images are beautifully printed — crisp, clear, and easily interpreted. There is a minimum of discussion and the teaching points are presented in bulleted lists. Note that there are no other tissue stains illustrated (e.g. methylene blue, immunoperoxidase). There is a modest bibliography and no references.
Assessment: This is an excellent book to keep near the microscope for teaching sessions. It is ideal for students of Mohs surgery tissue specimen interpretation as it presents an elegantly illustrated, organized, and thoughtful approach to the topic. For experienced Mohs surgeons, it is largely review (or at least should be).
