Chapter One: Franny's House

The Stein family lived in a pretty pink house with lovely purple shutters down at the end of Daffodil Street. Everything about the house was bright and cheery. Everything, that is, except the bedroom behind the tiny, round upstairs window.

This was Franny's bedroom, and she loved it more than anyplace else in the whole world, because this was where she came up with some of the most exciting new ideas in mad science.

But, as is often case for mad scientists, it was impossible to get her friends and family to take her work seriously.

Like when Franny presented her recently perfected Personal Cow to her father.

"Hey, Dad. Have a look at this. I genetically engineered a real cow for the portability that today's baby-on-the-go demands. See? Fresh milk anywhere."

"That's nice, Franny," he said without even looking up from his newspaper.

Or when Franny tried to show off her just-debugged Biggerizer to her little brother, Freddy.

"One blast from this device can make things hundreds of times bigger," Franny declared proudly.

"Can you use it in reverse and make your mouth smaller?" Freddy asked.

Franny answered, "It doesn't have a reverse setting. It only makes things bigger, but that's not a bad idea...." Before she could finish, he leapt on his skateboard and, with one swift push, rocketed out of sight.

Or when Franny called Percy, one of her new friends from school, to announce her new Manifester. "You put a picture of something in front of it, flip the switch, and - ZAP! - it creates a real three-dimensional reproduction of it."

"Did you ever put ketchup on corn chips?" Percy asked witlessly.

Franny blinked. "Ketchup on corn chips? Did you hear a single word I said, Percy? The Manifester actually makes real things from pictures and pictures from real things. It's total madness."

"I like corn chips," he said, and Franny hung up the phone.

Franny's mom had been watching and she felt bad for Franny.

She might not have chosen to have a mad scientist for a daughter, but that's what Franny was.

And since that's what Franny was, her mom had spent a lot of time trying to learn about mad scientists.

One of the things she learned was this: Mad scientists need assistants to whom they can show their tiny cows, weird devices, and crazy gizmos, assistants who were always excited and who always listened.

My first grade son discovered the Franny K. Stein series and can't get enough of them. They are easy enough for him to read and he loves the pictures.

All the girls agreed that they enjoyed the book. Here are some comments from the girls:1) What was their favorite part of the book: Maddie & Stephanie ¿ the poems; Dani & Rebecca ¿ Igor making heart stamps with his nose; Anna ¿ Cupid drinking the milk from the cow; Emily ¿ Cupid¿s butt and Carmen ¿ when the machine made Cupid big. 2) If you were a Mad Scientist, what would you invent? : Maddie would invent a robot to clean her house; Dani would invent a robot that looks like her; Rebecca would invent a robot that would go to school for her and do her homework; Stephanie & Emily would invent a robot that would do all their chores; Anna would invent a endless doughnut machine (she loves doughnuts); Carmen would invent a machine that will make all her wishes come true.

Franny told her told her dog Igor that he couldn¿t touch anything in her lab if he was going to be the assistant. Valentine¿s Day was coming up and Franny¿s teacher told her to draw a cupid. Igor wanted his ball off of Franny¿s desk and he tried to get it with his nose but he dropped the ball and it activated Franny¿s Manifester which turned the picture of the cupid into a live 50 ft. cupid. When Franny woke up she was mad at Igor so she used the Manifester and made herself 50 ft. tall to try and stop the cupid. To make the cupid smaller, Franny gave him milk. Then she and Igor went around putting things back together that the Cupid had destroyed. They sewed the house back together. Instead of drawing a cupid for her teacher, Franny used the Manifester to make a big chocolate-covered cherry for her.

My daughter loves these books. They read well and aren't too easy or too hard. The chapters are short, so feels like she's accomplished something when she's read several chapters in one sitting. A fun storyline too. It's taken me awhile to find something that she enjoys and wants to read. A great find!

This book held his attention and he was fascinated with the plot, pictures and Franny's strong and quirky personality. We both loved the character of Igor the LAB assistant and the exploration of love and friendship. My son's favorite part is when Franny makes her Valentines and they are goofy, gory, clever and hilarious! Fun for mom and son.

Franny is a girl, who is a mad scientist. She gets an assistant, but she doesn¿t like him because he is a dog. His name is Igor. Igor really wanted to help Franny, but she always told him to sit in the corner and all he could touch was his little, black, rubber ball. Franny went to school to show her teacher the Valentines she made it was obvious that she had no clue what valentines were. So Miss Shelly said that people draw stuff like Cupid, hearts, and love arrows. Then Franny asked what Cupid was. Miss Shelly drew a picture of him. Igor went to get his little toy ball. He accidentally pressed a button, which makes the picture of Cupid come to life, but the rays that another button called the Biggersizer, which makes it bigger. It turned Cupid into a real, live, big thing. He was going around slinging his arrows at people, which makes them fall in love. Can Franny Keep Cupid from hitting everyone with his arrows and still make all her Valentines cards? Read the book and you¿ll find out.
