The reader is encouraged to consider how theories and the scientific method, in the hands of these and other dedicated researchers, are leading to greater knowledge and continued progress in autism research.

Description: If you a looking for a single source of the current theories of the pathophysiology and etiology of autism, this excellent book fits the bill. This new book, which is edited and authored by a cadre of internationally recognized leading researchers in the field, is a worthwhile contribution to the understanding of this all too common disorder.
Purpose: The purpose is to present the state of the science, "although it is clear that there is still much to be done, the work presented here demonstrates substantive progress in autism research. It is likely that no unifying theory will explain the myriad processes and forms of autism: rather, interrelated theories will weave together interacting causal pathways to explain its diverse manifestations."
Audience: The book is targeted at clinicians, families, and researchers in this rapidly developing field.
Features: A wide variety of topics is covered. For example, part 1 focuses on molecular and clinical genetics with an interesting chapter on the genetics of cerebellar development, teratogenic alleles, and cholesterol metabolism in Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome. Neurotransmitters and cell signaling are covered in part 2, which includes chapters on serotonin, excitotoxicity, prenatal beta2 adrenergic signaling, and fetal testosterone. Part 4 discusses immune factors in autism. The neuroanatomy and neural networks involved in autism are reviewed in part 6 with chapters on minicolumnar size variability, brain imaging, and information processing-connectivity models. The final section focuses on environmental mechanisms and models in autism. Each chapter ends with relevant and timely citations of the scientific literature.
Assessment: This is an outstanding new book on contemporary theories of autism and the evidence that supports them. Anyone who wants to be literate about this field needs to read this book!
