Overview

On the death of their artist father, Ayala and Lucy Dormer are farmed out to relations. Ayala, the more romantic of the two sisters, has a high ideal of the man she wishes to marry, but reality requires she choose between the vulgar Captain Batsby, her callow cousin Tom Tringle, and ugly Jonathan Stubbs.

The wit and persistence of the latter win out finally, and he is transfigured into Ayala's "Angel of Light."

A romantic comedy of implacable exuberance, AYALA'S ANGEL is the brightest and freshest of Trollope's novels.
