When the young age Arthur pulls from the stone an embedded sword that none of the knights of the kingdom can budge, his future as the King of England is foretold. This imaginative retelling of the classic Arthurian legends recounts the story of Arthur's formation of the Knights of the Round Table, his securing of the enchanted sword Excalibur, and his wooing of the Lady Guinevere. Included as well are the legends of Sir Pelleas, the story of Sir Gawaine's pursuit of the White Hart, and tales of Merlin the magician, Morgana Le Fay, the Lady of the Lake, and many others.

It is books like these make continue to shop at Barnes & Noble! Please publish the other King Arthur books, as this is only the first volume of Howard Pyle's comprehensive take on the Arthurian tales. Within this volume, you will find the familiar stories of the sword in the stone, Morgan le Fay, Merlin, the Lady of the Lake, Guinevere, and ending at the marriage of Gawaine. For those who have read Malory, you may be surprised to find that Pyle seems to be drawing some other details from the French Vulgate. Even so, the story is far from complete in this volume. There are a few other volumes that would make this a beautiful gift set: 2.Story of the Champions of the Round Table (this can be found as a free e-book in many places) 3. Story of Sir Lancelot and his Champions 4. Story of the Grail and the Passing of Arthur If you are reading this, Barnes & Noble, believe me: there are many King Arthur fans out there that will buy these volumes, if you give it the same treatment you gave this volume. Pyle's take on the Arthurian legends are sanitized for children, although the language still is archaic and beautifully so. The illustrations are a real treat. The print font is exquisite; they did this volume right. If books like these continue to be a part of the Barnes & Noble experience, I will continue to frequent and purchase these volumes.

Great book, but a little bit of a stretch for a young reader. There are some slow parts, but it's an easy book to pick back up. My biggest thing is actually that the black detailing on mine has begun to peel and now a portion of it is completely gone. This is because in order to bring it around, I had to put it in my backpack. Overall, I still like the book, just remember to take better care of it than I did :)

Beautiful collection! Language is a bit advanced for the younger crowd but paraphrasing when reading to them should suffice.

Another great collection to B&N though thelanguage might be a bit difficult for younger kids.

Something of a travesty. Pyle's gorgeous line illustrations hidden under colors added for the comic book crowd. Beautiful deep blacks now muted with color overlaid, and Pyle's handsome hand lettering replaced with computer created fonts. Of course the writing is still there, but the beauty of the book is gone. Quick, go to ebay and buy a real copy from years gone by. I'm donating my copy (sorry I bought it) to the local library book sale.

This is one of many Leatherbound Classics that I have purchased and it like the others does not disappoint. Beautiful leather cover makes this classic tale even more appealing.

It's a very nice edition. My only annoyance with this book is that the story is not finished and the betrayal and death of Arthur is completely left out. I get this edition might be geared towards children, but even children should know how the story ends. It's present in other children's editions i have seen like Puffin classics.

A very nice leather bound copy of Howard Pyle's edition of the story of King Arthur (Sword in the Stone) Not quite as well crafted as the standard BN Collectable series, but well worth it nonetheless
