About the Author

Michael Shurin, MD, PhD, Professor of Pathology and Immunology, Medical Director of Clinical Immunopathology of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The goal of Dr. Shurin's research program is to contribute to the identification of factors and mechanisms that regulate cellular interactions in the pre-malignant niche, tumor microenvironment and pre-metastatic niche focusing on immune regulatory cells and neuroglial elements. The goal of Dr. Shurin's clinical program is to update and improve clinical laboratory immunology tests and assays, and to develop novel tests and methods required by our clinical needs. This includes development and validation of novel tests for assessing SARS-CoV-2 infection. Dr. Shurin has broad background in biochemistry, immunology and oncology, with advanced training and specific expertise in clinical immunopathology, cellular and molecular immunology, and animal tumor models. For more than 35 years he has been conducting research in the field of clinical and experimental immunology with almost 20 years devoted to the mechanisms of immune regulation in cancer and novel approaches to immunotherapy. More than 220 publications, four edited books, 12 organized international conferences, plentiful invited talks, intensive teaching in the USA and abroad, and many successful domestic and international collaborations might serve as evidence of a productive research career and professional integrity in all endeavors.

Purpose: The purpose of the book is not clearly presented. While it lacks the depth of a traditional textbook, it provides an easy way to search for individuals and conditions related to immunology, as the entries are alphabetically arranged. Readers can use this book to obtain a short synopsis before diving further into the literature.
Audience: By nature of its organizational design, the book cannot possibly provide in-depth information on each topic, so it will not be valuable for those at an expert or proficient level of immunology. However, it will be attractive to individuals starting a career in medicine, for example, pre-medical students or undergraduate students, as a tool to stimulate interest in the field. The primary author is a professor of pathology and immunology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and is clearly a credible authority in his field. The credentials of the other two authors are not provided.
Features: The book does not contain figures, pictures, illustrations, tables, or graphics. Including these features would have made the book much more interesting. Regarding its comprehensiveness, there is no way for a single book to be entirely inclusive, as immunology is such a large field, so surely some important items have been omitted. Given the rapid advancement of the field, new terms and concepts should be added in future editions. Immunology also permeates many other fields, so it is not clear whether the book should include other items such as genetic terms or rheumatologic items.
Assessment: This book is clearly a unique publication. While it is an interesting resource, its utility is probably limited, at least for those specializing in the field of immunology.
