About the Author

Zulema Valdez is Associate Professor of Sociology at University of California-Merced, where she teaches courses on racial and ethnic relations in the U.S. and international migration. Her research has been published in Social Science Quarterly, Race Gender and Class, and The Journal of Ethnic and Immigration Studies. In 2011 she published The New Entrepreneurs: How Race, Class and Gender Shape American Enterprise (Stanford University Press). The student body at Merced is representative of many campuses and communities in California, the Southwest, the Pacific Northwest, and parts of other states: only 14% are white and the two largest racial/ethic groups are Hispanic (46%) and Asian/Pacific Islander (25%).
