Overview

This CD reissues trumpeter Bill Coleman's complete set at the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival, expanding the original LP from six to eight songs. Coleman matches well with the thick-toned tenor of Guy Lafitte and both seem to inspire each other. On swing standards, blues and basic originals, the two horns are assisted by pianist Marc Hemmeler, bassist Jack Sewing and drummer Daniel Humair. There are not many Bill Coleman CD's available domestically (he owed his near-anonymity to the fact that he spent so many decades living in Europe), making this one well worth picking up. Coleman excels in the small-group setting, performing such numbers as "Blue Lou," "Idaho" and "I Want A Little Girl" (singing the latter). Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
