Picking up where Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Women: The Qing Period, 1644-1911 (1998) left off, this monumental reference contains 300 biographies of prominent Chinese women active from 1912 until 1990, with some biographies including information as current as 2000. Carefully edited by scholars Lee and Stefanowska (both Chinese studies, Univ. of Sydney) and contributed by over 80 authors and translators from across the globe, the one-page biographies profile influential women from mainland China and Taiwan as well as those of Chinese descent born overseas and those from minority nationalities, all of whom have left their mark in a variety of fields (e.g., arts, sciences, industry and commerce, politics and government, and religion). Some of the figures profiled-authors Amy Tan, Maxine Hong Kingston, Han Suyin, and Ding Ling; actress Gong Li; and political figures like Jiang Qing and the three Soong sisters-will be familiar to most people, but the vast majority are relatively unknown. Wade-Giles and Pinyin charts clarify alternate spellings, and the glossary has names in Chinese characters.
