Overview

Mark Isham's score to the 1998 action hit Blade derives its sensibility from the comic books that brought the title character to life. A loud, violent work defined more by its sound effects than by its melodies, its crazy quilt of sonic elements adds up to a fractured, often unpleasant listening experience. Isham employs everything from massive orchestral passages to bleak synthesizer textures to piercing Middle Eastern vocals, and none of it fits comfortably together. There's an undeniable sense of energy and action pulsing through Blade, but while the music works within the context of the onscreen narrative, as an isolated listening experience it's an absolute mess. ~ Jason Ankeny
