5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful beginner book about a trip to the library

My five year old is nearing the end of kindergarten, and he can sound out simple words, slowly, but he's nowhere near confident in independent reading. At home we have some Bob books (we have the sight words set and the beginning reader set; he can read them but they aren't colorful and the plots are strange) and some PJ Masks "step 1" Step into reading books (they seem hard for step 1 to me, and they are long enough that getting my kid to finish even one book involves a ton of encouragement, if not begging and pleading to keep going).

My 5 year old was able to read this book all by himself! I sat with him and prompted him with the correct word in cases where he just wasn't getting it (think: pronouncing take like tack), but otherwise he read every word on his own. He LOVED searching for the squirrel on each page (and so did my non-reading 3 year old), and he especially loved the pages when the squirrel was doing something cute or funny. The squirrel was so much fun that he wanted to find it on each page before even reading the text. Both kids looove the squirrel.

This book is about a trip to a library. The main character has a prosthetic arm but the story doesn't mention it or make a big deal of it, which is a wonderful example of inclusion of all different people. The main character does the kinds of things that you might do at a library, which is a nice realistic story for a young child, relatable to the child's life. There are some fun little jokes in the graphics - funny book titles on the library search screen, funny section titles on book shelves. I pointed them out to my five year old and we had a great laugh about it. We discussed all the parts of a library - the book drop, the computers for searching. The way that people who don't have a computer at home can use the library computer. We bought all of the books of this series except one (which I left out by accident) and when my son realized it was missing, he begged me to go back to Amazon and buy "the other squirrel book" right away so he can read it. So I would say this book was a big win for us, and I'd happily recommend it to any beginning reader who is a true beginner.
