Overview

In the midst of the Spanish Civil War, an organization called Mujeres Libres mobilized more than 20,000 women to fight for women's rights within leftist organizations. In this study, Ackelsberg presents a history of Mujeres Libres, intertwining interviews with participants and analysis connecting the organization with modern feminist movements. Ackelsberg teaches government and women's studies at Smith College. This is an expanded edition of a volume originally published by Indiana U. Press in 1991.
