Purpose: The purpose is to highlight the Boston Children's Hospital (BCH) orthopedic staff's best-practice approach to reconstructive surgical procedures for consideration by the pediatric orthopedic community at large. The editors are all highly qualified to write and oversee their local contributors. Peter M. Waters, MD is orthopedic surgeon-in-chief at Boston Children's Hospital and a John E. Hall professor of orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School. Benjamin J. Shore, MD, MPH and Daniel J. Hedequist, MD are also orthopedic surgeons affiliated with Boston Children's.
Audience: The primary audiences are pediatric orthopedic surgeons and their fellows. All orthopedic residents are expected to read this work.
Features: The text is divided into seven sections: spine, hand and upper limb, hip, lower extremity and foot, sports, cerebral palsy, and orthopedic oncology. Each section is introduced by a chapter on decision-making issues. There are a limited number of selected procedures per section. A bullet format is used for brevity of the written word but all necessary detail steps are described. Assessment: This book is an important contribution to the current and future practice of pediatric orthopedics worldwide. One of the aims of editor Waters and his associates is to profile the works of a truly acclaimed orthopedic facility at BCH starting from the times of the renowned former chief-of-staff, John Emmett Hall, MD (1925-2018). The book chapters are written by experienced surgeons who we hope will work to expand the number of operations in future editions.
