Description: This book is a review text which provides, in outline form, salient points regarding major topics in pediatrics. Each section ends with several case related questions followed by answers referring to the preceding outline. The text ends with a comprehensive case based examination with answers referenced to the various sections of the book.
Purpose: The stated purpose is to provide medical students and physicians with a comprehensive but manageable overview of the basic principles of pediatrics. The authors hope this will provide a strong basis for students and young physicians to learn about pediatric medicine. These are certainly worthy objectives; however, with the limited information that is provided in this text, many questions go un-asked and may not necessarily stimulate a search for further knowledge.
Audience: This text is written for 3rd and 4th year medical students and young MDs taking step II of the USMLE who require basic knowledge and review of pediatrics.
Features: The book provides an outline of critical points of information in chapters based on the subspecialties of pediatrics. Each chapter provides some valuable nuggets of information in outline form with minimal explanations or details on background. The questions provide brief testing of some of these issues in board format using case examples.
Assessment: Using reasonable examples and case-based questions, this text seems to be useful as a quick study review just before testing. It should not be regarded as an ongoing resource for clinicians in pediatrics. The review is provided to stimulate further reading to advance one's understanding of pediatrics. It is not a replacement for more comprehensive tests.
