Description: This thorough review of reptile medicine includes significant updates since the second edition was published in 2004. The high-quality images and well laid out charts that appear throughout the book are by far among its best features, clearly illustrating the discussions.
Purpose: This book honors its purpose well, providing clear, practical advice for general or specialty practitioners caring for reptile patients.
Audience: This is a clear, easy-to-use reference for veterinary students or general practitioners who may see only a small number of reptile patients. It also provides detailed guidance for practitioners with a specialty/high reptile caseload to advance their practice, including optimal surgical and endoscopic techniques as well as a compilation of less common disease presentations as reported in the primary literature, including cardiac, neoplastic, and neurological conditions. The authors are recognized experts in reptile medicine and surgery.
Features: The book covers basic and advanced husbandry, medicine, and surgery of reptile species in managed care. Among the topics it covers are basic anatomy and physiology, captive care and nutrition, basic and more advanced medicine and surgical foci, as well as specific species, including crocodilians and sea turtles. It begins with a basic overview, suitable for those with limited experience in the field. As the book progresses, the topics get more advanced, allowing the authors to target a more specialized audience wishing to enhance their expertise and clinical prowess with these species. Throughout, the writing is clear and concise, supplemented well by high-quality images and well-formatted charts which can be used as an at-a-glance quick reference.
Assessment: This book does a lot to provide accessible, clear guidance for practitioners across experience levels caring for reptile species. The photographs and charts are extremely well done and are a major strength of this book.
