Build Stuff with Wood is a true beginner's guide to woodworking, aimed at anyone who is interested in the craft but has little to no tools and no real idea where to start. The idea behind the book is to begin with a few portable power tools (cordless drill, jigsaw, etc.), build a bunch of cool projects with that basic kit, and then add skills and tools as you go. For example, adding a small router to your arsenal allows you to gracefully round edges on tables and shelves; buying a simple doweling jig opens up the world of joinery. In all, 14 fun projects will be presented, all built with just a few woodworking tools and off-the-shelf lumber.

About the Author

Asa Christiana worked for Fine Woodworking magazine for 15 years, 8 of them as chief editor. Today, he lives in Portland, Oregon, where he builds furniture and works as a freelance writer, editor, and photographer. He is the author of Build Stuff with Wood (Taunton Press, 2017), a project-by-project guide for woodworking beginners, and Handmade: A Hands-On Guide (Taunton Press, 2018), which features a variety of easy projects in a range of materials, including wood, leather, concrete, and more. Asa also teaches frequently at his local woodworking guild.

This solid, basic primer wonderfully reflects straightforward instruction with some very desirable projects. Christiana, former chief editor of Fine Woodworking magazine, promises no crazy joinery or complexity. The progression of projects guides users through basic power tool skills. The organization is well thought out, including materials and a supplies list with a line drawing of the project with dimension. Furniture pieces include benches and tables, and the wood slab table and wooden cell phone speaker are particularly stunning. Christiana's guidance is great, and the pictures are clear. Includes a foreword by Nick Offerman. VERDICT This book will leave readers with great projects and skills. Highly recommended—beautiful pieces, excellent instruction.
