The Burning Sky
To salvage his broken-down ranch, near-bankrupt Ben Pearce devises a hunting scheme, the consequences of which he cannot begin to imagine. The prey: three rare, fierce cats—a leopard and two mountain lions caught in the wild. The predators: an arrogant Texas millionaire, his beautiful but disturbed wife, and their near-psychopathic teenage son. Each of them will hunt one of the animals with only Ben as guide: first the wife, then the son, and finally the Texan. In a closed New Mexico canyon, a hunt conceived in evil will run its deadly course when the hunters discover that the leopard is stalking them—an unexpected twist in this terrifying game that will forever change their lives.

They slowly moved out into the clearing. The dogs were encouraged by their presence: they snarled, barked, leaped toward the cat. “Okay,” Stuart said. They were forty feet away from the tree. Ben thumbed back the hammers on his shotgun. The clicks attracted the leopard’s attention, and he turned toward them. Ben had difficulty focusing his eyes on the cat; his coal-black rosettes seemed to jump out and then recede in opposition to the pale gold of the fur. The wind rose, ruffled the fur and showed a paler yellow, almost a white. The cat slowly rose to his feet. He watched them. His eyes were a cold speckled amber.Stuart slowly raised his bow. The cat watched, hunching his back slightly, flicking his tail.
“Oh, shit, man,” Ben said. “Do it.” Or maybe he hadn’t said it; maybe he’d only thought the words.
Stuart had the bow fully drawn now.
The leopard was beautiful, terrible. His cold cold defiance triggered contradictory emotions in Ben: he wanted to laugh, and to vomit.
The bowstring twanged, and the arrow shaft, as thin and straight as a beam of light, connected origin and goal, time and space, and pierced the leopard’s heart.

From the resonant, sinewy prose of the opening pages to the horrifying end, there is not a wasted word or a false move in this tautly thrilling novel.”

“A writer of enormous talent, a stylist to admire and a storyteller of great power.”
—Scott Turow, author of Presumed Innocent

“Faust writes beautifully . . . he reminds you of Hemingway and Peter Matthiessen. . . . Faust has it all: lyrical prose, complex characters and provocative plots.”
—Booklist

“Faust’s clear, unadorned prose and his deft, pure characterization ring with the force of Hemingway or Graham Greene.”
