Ida Affleck Graves, was first published as Ida Graves by Lenoard Woolf and the Hogarth Press; later (post-war) novels came from Faber. Then a long silence, during which she wrote but stuffed poems into a drawer, was broken by OUP's book of poems, A Kind Husband , published in 1994. The Calfbearer consists of nearly all new poems, written since then, as vigorous and moving as ever. The poems are emphatic and observant, on subjects such as her childhood, animals; and a few that look bravely on death. About the Author

Ida Affleck Graves was born in 1902 in India, and first published a book of poems in 1929 with Virginia and Leonard Woolf's Hogarth Press. Later, a couple of slim volumes appeared, illustrated by her well-known engraver husband, Blair Hughes Stanton, and together they won a Venice Biennale Prize in 1937. She published novels and children's books with Faber in the 1950s.
