About the Author

Keith J. Holyoak is Professor and Vice-Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has made a number of major contributions to the scientific understanding of human thinking and has pioneered modern work on the role of analogy in thinking.

Robert G. Morrison is President and Partner of Xunesis, a theatre and exhibition production company dedicated to educating the general public about scientific theory and research through creative means. He received his PhD in cognitive neuroscience from UCLA. His research involves understanding how the human brain implements higher cognition.

Thinking and reasoning were once only the domain of philosophy, but now such fields as cognitive psychology, neuroscience, medicine, linguistics, and even economics examine these higher-level cognitive processes. Holyoak (psychology, UCLA) and Morrison (president and partner, Xunesis) write that they wanted to create a handbook that could be used by those working in the fields that study thinking and reasoning and that would offer a quick overview of core topics, current research, and future areas of interest. The finished product is a handbook of 32 chapters covering a broad range of subjects, from inductive and deductive reasoning to the effect of aging on reasoning.
