Overview

This is a book of psychiatry at its most practical level. It aims to answer the sorts of questions psychiatrists ask on a daily basis. What treatments are available for the condition that I think this patient has? What is the relative value of each of these treatments? Are there any other treatments that I should be considering if a first approach has failed? Is there any value in combinations of treatment? And, can I be sure that the evidence and recommendations I read are free from bias? The content is organised into three sections covering disease classification, the major treatment modalities and the application of these treatments to the wide range of psychiatric diagnoses. Description: This book offers a review of the medical field's current understanding of psychiatric disease and the various treatment modalities used to combat these illnesses.
Purpose: The purpose is to offer practicing mental health professionals a review of the latest evidence-based treatments and alternative treatments for psychiatric disorders, and to compare their relative values and biases.
Audience: According to the authors, the book is written for any mental health professional, but it might be more useful to psychiatrists than psychologists, because of the emphasis on pharmacology and other medically based treatment modalities.
Features: The book is divided into three parts. Part I is an introductory section that covers the history and classification of psychiatric disorders. Part II reviews the major treatment modalities, such as psychopharmacology, electroconvulsive therapy, psychotherapy, and so on. This section contains an excellent, up-to-date chapter on focal brain treatments such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, and deep brain stimulation. Part III, which will be the most useful to practicing clinicians, discusses treatments according to diagnostic groups (mood disorders, eating disorders, etc). Each chapter is followed by an extensive reference list. There are no illustrations, but numerous tables are used throughout.
Assessment: This is truly an excellent book that offers a well organized, clinician-friendly review of the latest understanding and treatment of psychiatric disorders. A particularly strong attribute is the fact that it is a collaborative effort by psychiatrists from both North America and Europe; the synthesis of their recommendations is thorough and intriguing.
