This book presents the physiologic and technical fundamentals as well as the clinical applications of capnography. It is the work of a single author but is part of a series of anesthesia textbooks entitled The Principles and Practice Series. The author attempts to introduce the reader to the basic principles of carbon dioxide physiology, technical descriptions of currently available instruments for measuring respiratory and transcutaneous CO2, and lastly to clinical applications of CO2 measurement. The contribution of capnography to the improved safety of modern anesthetic practice and the creation of standard monitoring guidelines are discussed. This book covers topics of considerable importance to anesthesiologists and other physicians, nurses, and technicians who participate in the care of patients who require monitoring of respiratory and cardiovascular functions. The material is presented in basic and rudimentary fashion and thus is well suited to be an introductory text for medical students, nurses, respiratory therapists, nurse anesthetists, and anesthesia residents. The book has many figures that illustrate the essential components of currently available CO2 detection devices, photographs of representative models of available instruments, tracings of spectroscopic data, and capnographic tracings from clinically applicable conditions. The diagrams and illustrations are helpful and clear, although often the text referring to a figure is not on the same page as the figure. The references are current, but are almost exclusively limited to review articles or references to other textbooks with only rare references to original scientific articles. This textbookwill serve its purpose as an initial introduction to the topic of respiratory CO2 monitoring. It does so by presenting physiologic background and technical features of capnography and by describing clinical applications.
