Overview

Cars [Original Soundtrack]

Disney's latest heart-warmer replaces the anthropomorphic playthings of Toy Story with humanized automobiles -- but it retains the careful balance of good-time pop and gently rollicking, family-friendly rock 'n' roll that made for such an enjoyable soundtrack. Cars relies a bit more on big names and familiar tunes than its Pixar-ish predecessors, but those elements are conjoined in ways that aren't entirely expected. Country kingpins Rascal Flatts, for instance, are called upon to retool Tom Cochrane's "Life Is a Highway" -- a song that takes well to its relocation to Nashville's interstate -- while John Mayer tries his hand at updating "Route 66." Mayer does a credible job, offering an appealing rendition that's practically bursting with eagerness; but he can't quite manage to outstrip Chuck Berry's original (a fact that's hard to ignore, since the Berry version is also presented here). Sheryl Crow's "Real Gone" easily stamps itself as the best of the disc's freshly minted songs, thanks to the singer's playful, coquettish delivery, but the real treat is Randy Newman's score, which takes up the last half the disc. Admittedly, incidental music is usually just that, but Newman packs these ten pieces with enough offbeat instrumentation and stylistic winks to make them worth going back to again and again -- especially for those whose musical diet is sorely lacking in bluegrass tuba workouts.

My son loves Cars Movie, so we bought the soundtrack. He loves it! What's not to love....if your child loves the movie, they'll love hearing the same songs over again! Only thing is there are 20 tracks and only about 11 of them are really songs with singing. The others are just instrumental, which he's not too into.

My kids LOVE this soundtrack - even the instrumental songs, since they know the movie so well and can commentate just 'what' is happening when that music is playing :) I agree with another reviewer though that some of the lyrics on the 'net are incorrect. "Just a front you wait and see" doesn't fit - I think its more like "Its just infactuatin' prophecy" but what do I know??

Love this CD. "Real Gone" just gets my blood going and is a bit dangerous to hear in my car. Just a little note though, everywhere on the net, it seems like the lyrics they have posted are all "I'm American made but I like Chevrolet," Which makes no sense at all, or "I'm American made, Bud light, Chevrolet," which is better but not very coherent- But what I hear is "I'm American made, bought a large Chevrolet" Which makes the most sense considering the song. Just in case anyone else was wondering.

Wonderful for all ages! A true hit to bring family values to all of us,that seems to have taken a backseat to entertainment of late. Finally a movie I can watch with my parents, my children 29-9 yrs of age and my grandkids without explaining "stuff" and not turning red faced. My husband, who never goes with us to movies, wanted to go and see this with us and lovvvvvvved it. Race more to us!!!!!!!!

I love this CD! Although I would not have put John Mayer on it (as Simon would say: he sounded like a polar bear in Miami). The reason I gave this CD five stars is that Rascal Flatts did an AMAZING job (as always), and Randy Newman's score was just...breathtaking. Being a clarinet/bass clarinet player and a band member, I loved the way he gave clarinets a chance to shine. :) Not to mention the brass...! I would definitely buy this CD all over again!
