Description: This edition of an iconic book in toxicology lives up to its standard as the premier reference in the field. It has some author changes from the previous edition, which have brought in new perspectives. However, most of the book remains unchanged. Its extremely large size (over 1,600 pages) is definitely daunting but is expected for a reference of this kind. The previous edition was published in 2013.
Purpose: It is designed to provide readers in-depth information on almost all aspects of toxicology. It is one of the best-known books in the field and it tackles a wide range of subjects from old favorites such as basic principles, chemical carcinogenesis, and risk assessment to new ideas such as nanotoxicology.
Audience: The book is clearly meant for early and advanced professionals of toxicology. It is not a book that either undergraduate or even graduate students can use as a textbook for their coursework due to its sheer volume. It is one-stop reference where professionals from industry, academia, government, and consulting can find information they are looking for along with references.
Features: This book covers all aspects of toxicology in significant detail. It addresses a wide range of topics from basic to cutting edge. Chapters are grouped in subunits such as basic principles, effects, agents, etc. Each chapter is written by leaders in that field and comes with extensive references that help readers find additional information if needed. The excellent color figures are beautiful and comprehensive, the type and general aesthetics of the book are pleasing.
Assessment: This is likely to remain a major reference preferred by toxicology professionals. There are several similar books, but this one stands out for the depth of each chapter and the fact that most of the authors are leaders in research in their particular areas. Although any single chapter may not be the last word on its topic, it is certainly a good starting point to obtain a general overview.
