Description: This book is a study aid for preparing for the USMLE examinations. It has been published in its sixth edition.
Purpose: As a study aid, the book presents cases in internal medicine in order for students to review and become comfortable with the testing procedure, as well as to provide study vignettes and explanations of how to resolve the cases.
Audience: The audience is primarily those studying for the USMLE, but the cases are a tremendous review for residents-in-training and any clinicians.
Features: The book is divided into three sections: how to approach clinical problems, clinical cases, and review questions. The text begins with an introduction on how to get the most out of the book, followed by section 1, which discusses the approach to the patient, an approach to clinical problem solving, and an approach to reading. Section 2 consists of 60 vignettes of cases. The cases typically start by presenting the patient and asking a number of questions, followed by explanations on the clinical approach, the pathophysiology, and treatment. There are numerous intuitive tables, figures, and clinical pearls, with a list of comprehensive questions further expounding on the case.
Assessment: Like previous editions, this edition is an extraordinarily useful study aid and well worth the investment for students, residents, and attendings interested in maintaining currency in internal medicine.
