Dunn Senior Academic Chair and Program Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program; Vice Chair of Academic Affairs in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Methodist Hospital—Houston; Clerkship Director and Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The University of Texas—Houston Medical School (Houston, Texas).


Dr. Debra L. Klamen is Associate Dean of Education and Curriculum as well as Professor and Chair of the Department of Medical Education at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (Springfield, Illinois). She is also a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at SIU.

Description: This updated review is a collection of 60 case vignettes targeted at medical students completing psychiatry clerkships. The previous edition was published in 2012.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an introduction to psychiatry for medical students on clinical rotations, with the aim of preparing them for patient encounters as well as exams. These are important objectives, and the authors do a fair job meeting them. The clinical cases tend to be filled with buzzwords and are generally straightforward compared to actual patient encounters.
Audience: The book is well written for the intended audience of medical students studying psychiatry. The two editors are a psychiatrist and an obstetrician/gynecologist. The book would have more authority if both were psychiatrists.
Features: After a brief overview of psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, the book presents 60 case vignettes and analyses followed by comprehension questions. The cases are designed to simulate real patient encounters, and the accompanying analyses teach students how to approach a case and focus on important information. The main drawback is that several of the comprehension questions are poorly written, ambiguous, or incorrect. For example, the answer to a question about the best treatment for generalized anxiety disorder is buspirone. The explanation claimed that the other answer choices, which included SSRIs and CBT, have not been proven effective in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder. The other errors in questions are relatively minor and unlikely to be of great consequence for most medical students.
Assessment: Among the many review books aimed at medical students, the Case Files series benefits from the real-life approach to clinical problems. The book could benefit from some consolidation as there is significant repetition. It lacks a high-yield review section that is common in similar titles. This edition is a needed update to reflect the changes in DSM-5. Overall, it is a useful tool for medical students or others new to the field of psychiatry. It is unlikely to be of much educational benefit to psychiatry residents or others with general knowledge of psychiatry as the material is at a fairly basic level.
