As evidenced on their self-titled debut, Nashville, Tennessee's Cheap Time clearly hail from the Buzzcocks' school of pop-punk, but play with an urgency that makes their Manchester grandfathers seem like exactly that. With a bracingly modern sense of noise, blister-inducing tempos, well-placed glam production touches, and killer melodies, Jeff Novak and Co. haven't made a retro-garage punk record so much as a thrillingly fresh stack of teenage kicks. Bonus: Novak is the kind of ripping guitarist that undercuts any notion that punk rockers lack technical chops.
