Though memoir can be dangerous territory for the nonfamous who haven't crashed a plane or climbed a mountain, fiction writer Skwiot (Sleeping with Pancho Villa) successfully renders an alchemical mix of the ordinary and the extraordinary. Herein he recounts his six-year-old self's experience on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 1953, when his working-class family was living in a converted fishing cabin on an Illinois lake and his unemployed father was offered a job that would mean moving to the city. Skwiot's vivid descriptions of the physical and emotional landscape of this environment are poignant, entertaining, and instructional, though some of the more visceral details of hunting and country life may be too much for younger or more squeamish readers. There is magic in this depiction of a setting and a way of life that can be described only as Edenic, an era not long removed in terms of time, but now very distant from the circumstances of modern life.
