The works of Marlowe are used here to attempt to flesh out their author, about whom little is known. Hopkins (English, Sheffield U., England; she's published widely in the field) proceeds chronologically in her reading, tracing themes of English colonialism and Marlowe's "insistently skeptical views of familial and social structures" throughout his oeuvre, while recognizing concurrent themes such as geography, politics, religious faith, and a questioning of the norms of sexuality and government.
