About the Author

Over the course of his thirty-five-year career, Scott Gustafson’s work has appeared on everything from calendars and jigsaw puzzles to tea boxes, as well as in animated films - yet it is in illustrating children’s books that he finds the greatest artistic satisfaction. Retelling classic stories and fables in images offers an artist a variety of opportunities and challenges. Locations,  historical periods, sets, lighting, and costume and character designs are just some of the elements Gustafson needs to consider, all of which contribute to the oil paintings in this book and bring these tales to life. According to Gustafson, his work on Classic Storybook Fables represents some of his most enjoyable hours spent at the easel. Gustafson lives and works in Chicago with his wife, Patty.

Gustafson follows Classic Bedtime Stories and other compilations with an eye-catching collection of eight short stories (Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling,” Aesop’s “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” and the Scandinavian tale “The Boy Who Went to the North Wind,” among others), which he retells in lyrical, accessible language. Lush paintings appear throughout, and Gustafson subtly tailors his images to the mood of each story. Gauzy, romantic images in “Beauty in the Beast” cast the Beast as a brooding, leonine figure in an opulent, candlelit palace. The eye of a richly feathered crow gleams with satisfaction in “The Crop and the Pitcher.” And Gustafson’s proudly naked emperor is a haughty, strutting pug with a wig worthy of Louis XIV. Eight familiar tales decked out in sumptuous visual finery.The contents are a mixed bag of retold Aesop, Andersen, and Anonymous, plus a much-abridged version of "Beauty and the Beast" credited to Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. Like Gustafson's similarly large-format Classic Fairy Tales (2003) and Classic Bedtime Stories (2014), the focus is on elegant styling and luxuriant detail—in the illustrations, at least. Though the typeface is ornate and attractive on the generously margined pages, the stories are recast in unaffected language, sometimes even informally: the Ugly Duckling is "sort of a gray color," and his hatchling nestmates peep, "Look at the big one. He's goofy-looking!" Likewise, when the Little Red Hen asks "Now, who will help me eat the bread?" and gets a chorus of "I will!" she responds, "Well, I wouldn't count on it!" In the paintings, most of the figures go about in European peasant or Renaissance fancy dress, but even unclothed barnyard fowl are splendidly turned out. "Beauty" takes place, mostly, in sumptuous candlelit surroundings as is customary, and aside from being a pug, "The Emperor Who Had No Clothes" resembles Louis XIV. Dogs and other common animals, most but not all anthropomorphically posed, make up most of the cast in five entries; the humans in three others and glimpsed elsewhere all seem to be white.
