About the Author

Ann W. Kummer, PhD, CCC-SLP, FASHAAnn W. Kummer, Ph.D., CCC-SLP retired as Senior Director of the Division of Speech-Language Pathology at Cincinnati Children’s in September 2017. Under her direction, the speech-language pathology program at Cincinnati Children’s became the largest pediatric program in the nation and one of the most respected. Dr. Kummer remains clinically and academically active as Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and has several other adjunct positions.Dr. Kummer has done hundreds of national and international lectures and seminars in the areas of cleft palate and craniofacial anomalies, resonance disorders, velopharyngeal dysfunction, and business practices in speech-language pathology. She has written numerous professional articles and 23 book chapters in speech pathology and medical texts. She is one of the authors of the text entitled Business Practices: A Guide for Speech-Language Pathologists (ASHA, 2004) and the author of the book entitled Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Conditions: A Comprehensive Guide to Clinical Management, 4th Edition (Jones & Bartlett Learning). She has taught a graduate course in cleft palate and craniofacial conditions at five universities. Her recorded lectures are included in the online site for her textbook.Dr. Kummer is the co-developer of the Simplified Nasometric Assessment Procedures (SNAP) test (1996) and author of the SNAP-R (2005) which is incorporated in the Nasometer software (PENTAX Medical). She holds a patent on the nasoscope, which is marketed as the Oral & Nasal Listener (Super Duper, Inc.). She was one of the main developers of workflow software that won the 1995 International Beacon Award through IBM/Lotus. Description: This fourth edition covers both normal and abnormal craniofacial structures, how anomalies affect functioning, and how to assess and treat children with abnormal craniofacial structures. The book comes with an extensive web companion site. A different publisher published the third edition in 2013.
Purpose: The purpose is to "inform, educate, and excite students and professionals" about clefts and craniofacial anomalies in the following professions: speech-language pathology, medicine, and dentistry. The author certainly has met this objective with this engaging, interesting, and readable text that has an equally helpful website companion.
Audience: Ann W. Kummer, PhD, a speech-language pathologist, is a recognized expert with 35 years of experience in the area of clefts and craniofacial abnormalities. She designed her book for graduate students studying speech-language pathology as well as professionals in speech-language pathology, medicine, and dentistry who want to gain more expertise in the subject. Speech-language pathologists who work in public schools or in hospitals with cleft palate teams will especially benefit from the comprehensive education this book provides.
Features: The book has 21 chapters broken into five sections thoroughly covering all aspects of clefts and craniofacial abnormalities, including assessment and treatment. Medical experts will benefit from the chapter on surgical techniques while dental professionals will appreciate the chapter on dental anomalies and solutions. Overall, the book is well illustrated with color figures, color photographs, and tables throughout. The author provides chapter outlines and summaries, case studies, definitions of terms, special notes on speech issues, questions for review and discussion, and up-to-date references in each chapter. Assessment: The fourth edition of Kummer's book is a welcome update of the 2013 third edition with many updates as well as new photos, drawings, tables, and research. There are several other books on the topic, but all are somewhat dated compared to this up-to-date text (see Treating Cleft Palate Speech, 2nd edition, Peterson-Falzone and Trost-Cardamone (Elsevier, 2017) or Evaluation and Management of Cleft Lip and Palate, Zajac and Vallino (Plural Publishing, 2017)). In comparison, this book has the most extensive coverage of clefts and craniofacial anomalies and is extremely readable.
