This quick reference for pediatric infectious diseases focuses on diagnosis and treatment, displaying most information in tabular or protocol form. This second edition features two new chapters on travel medicine and prophylactic antimicrobial therapy, as well as an extensive revision of the chapter on AIDS and updated antimicrobial therapy material. The purpose is to provide a reliable and concise manual that condenses essential information related to diagnosis and treatment. These worthy objectives are met by the editor. The editor targets the pediatrician or primary care physician as the intended audience. However, I believe it is best suited for students, residents, and allied health professionals. The editor is a well-recognized authority in the field and the contributors are faculty members at his medical school. Broad categories of pediatric infectious diseases from laboratory diagnosis to infections by system and antimicrobial therapy are covered satisfactorily. The text is clear and succinct. Its strength lies in the management protocols and tables (differential diagnosis, etc). Pathophysiology is not addressed and there are no references or photos of clinical material. Rheumatic fever, Kawasaki disease, and cat-scratch disease might be covered in greater depth. This book is appropriate for students, residents, or allied healthcare professionals. Much of what it covers may be gleaned from the 2000 Red Book: Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2000) or Nelson's Pocket Book of Pediatric Antimicrobial Therapy 200-2001 (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2000). This second edition is essential because the firstwas published in 1994, and much has changed in the field since then.

This is a new book whose focus is on the diagnosis and management of pediatric infectious diseases. It incorporates the contribution of several authors from Louisiana State University School of Medicine and Arkansas Children's Hospital. The purpose is to condense the vast amount of information in pediatric infectious disease into a concise and manageable guide related to the diagnosis, management, and treatment of common pediatric infectious diseases. The book meets its objective as a guide. It is targeted for the primary care physician and the house officer as a quick reference guide. The authors and contributors are credible in their respective areas; however, the majority of them are not pediatric infectious disease specialists. The book is presented in a tabular form that achieves the goal of condensing the information, but also hinders the book because of a paucity of supporting text. The book also suffers from inconsistency in the completeness of the topics presented, an attempt to cover too many topics, and the lack of any cited references. The authors allude to some references in the Preface, but the reader must make the assumption that the correct supporting sources were consulted. The book provides a guide to the management and treatment of pediatric infectious diseases; however, its lack of consistency and completeness detracts from the overall aim and quality of the book. This makes it a weak competitor to the other practical pediatric infectious diseases guides that are available to the clinician.

This second edition includes new information on dosage adjustments for neonates based on recent pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data, details on new classes of antiviral agents, and a revised chapter on AIDS in children. There are also new chapters on travel medicine and prophylactic antimicrobial therapy. Description: This is the third edition of a quick reference source for general pediatricians on how to diagnose, treat, and manage an extensive number of pediatric infectious disease conditions. The previous edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: The handbook is meant to provide an outline of how to manage infectious disease issues in general. The information is presented in a simple format and the book is meant to be a rapid check for already planned management. Unfortunately, it presents a little bit of information about a lot of conditions which might be very complicated and should not be managed by primary care physicians (e.g. brain abscess). Providing general guidelines is good, but not for complex diseases.
Audience: It is written for primary care providers, specifically pediatricians. However, at times the topics are too basic for pediatricians (e.g. the immunization schedule) and at other times too complex (how to manage an HIV patient). Never is it indicated that the primary care provider should refer complex patients to an ID specialist for care.
Features: The handbook is nicely subdivided into a systems-based approach and includes much needed chapters on laboratory diagnosis and travel medicine. However, the book does not reference any guidelines, either web-based or society-based, although the author states that the guidelines are considered in the book. There are no references, either in the chapters or at the end of the book. In reviewing topics on which I consider myself a particular expert (HIV), I noted some glaring errors and misinformation (e.g. medications not presented in the table on available medications and the wrong CD4s sited for the use of prophylaxis for MAC). Finally, the list of tables presented in the table of contents is overwhelming and poorly presented.
Assessment: I could not recommend this book. It is too general to be useful to either a generalist or a pediatric ID person. It lacks references and some of the information is inaccurate and misleading. In addition, it seems to imply that general pediatricians should manage some of these complicated issues and that is ill-advised.
