If Everyone Is Dieting, Why Are We Getting Fatter?

Ask your oldest living relatives about their life growing up and you might hear how exhausting it was to wake up with the roosters, go milk the cows, and bale hay all day long. You might hear about kids walking a couple of miles to and from school, actually playing during recess, and staying outside to play after school. In those days, you only stopped moving when your parents called you in for dinner. Most people who grew up in early 20th-century America were eating food fresh from the farm and getting plenty of daily activity. It was arguably the healthiest generation our country has ever seen.

Though it happened gradually, major changes have come our way over the course of the last 60 years. For most Americans, farm jobs, manual labor, and daily activity were replaced by office jobs, desk work, and labor- saving devices such as cars and dishwashers. These factors, especially the invention of the automobile, caused a significant decline in the amount of physical activity the average American experienced on a daily basis. And as our culture becomes more and more convenience-oriented, grocery delivery services and online shopping are making it easy to never leave home at all! What's more convenient than ordering a pizza from your couch and eating it in front of the movie you rented online?

"One day, I overheard an overweight woman talking to her friend while walking up to the doors of their gym. 'Let's not do any more work than we have to,' she said as she pushed a button and stepped aside to make room for the automatic doors. I was struck by the irony of her comment--she was on her way to exercise but didn't want to exert the effort needed to open the doors."--Greg

Equally detrimental to our health is the fact that while our energy expenditure has plummeted, the food processing industry has grown exponentially. During the late 20th century, the number of cheap, packaged products available in supermarkets exploded and the fast-food industry was born. Food became more accessible and plentiful than it had been at any other time in human history. And thanks to effective marketing on everything from billboards to radio to television, as well as the unrelenting use of the damaging food triple play--sugar, fat, and salt--we are now surrounded by products that are practically irresistible. Even if you are unusually strong-willed, it just takes one moment of weakness to find that you've inhaled a whopping 600 calories while driving or watching your favorite show.

Growing up in the '60s and '70s, we ate our share of sugary cereals, frozen TV dinners, canned soups, and other processed-food marvels. And like everyone else, we were so happy to have the convenience that we didn't question whether the ingredients in these foods might lead to serious health problems. It's remarkable that no one spoke up, when you consider that many of these foods were, and are still, made from refined flours, sugar, hydrogenated oils, and excessive amounts of salt, chemical fillers, and preservatives. The bottom line is that whether it snuck up on us or we simply chose to ignore this frightening trend, our families have been serving up meal after meal and snack after snack of these nutritionally empty foods for years.

Fake, Fattening Foods

There have been many health costs associated with America's widespread acceptance of processed foods. These include increased blood sugar and blood pressure levels, heart disease, and cancer.

But recent studies have revealed even bigger implications for the obesity epidemic. A person is much more likely to overeat when consuming a highly processed foods than when eating whole foods, especially if the fiber has been removed during the processing. This urge to overeat is not so much a conscious decision, but rather an autopilot physiological drive. Keeping a handful of potato chips from becoming the whole bag requires extraordinary self-control, and it doesn't help that everything has been supersized. Soft drinks, candy bars, fast-food meals, and even household staples like boxes of breakfast cereal have become enormous. Buying bigger usually means you get a better value, but it also means that you are likely to eat more. According to recent research, it's human nature to gobble down more candy from a huge package than a "fun-size" one. You are hard-wired to overeat when the opportunity is in front of you, and in our world, opportunity knocks often!

In a nutshell, processed foods are nearly impossible to eat in moderation, they're literally everywhere, and you can supersize them any time you like. Yikes! It's no wonder that society is fatter now than at any other time in history and that this change happened so quickly.

The implications of larger serving sizes, combined with our biological drive to overeat, are disastrous for a culture that faces large, extra- large, and jumbo-size portions throughout the day. Consider this: If you eat an extra 200 calories per day beyond what your body needs, at the end of a year you will have gained 20 £ds of fat. Many serving sizes have more than doubled in the last few decades. For example, in the 1970s, the standard fast-food order of a hamburger, fries, and a drink contained 650 calories, or about the same as today's regular hamburger, small fries, and small drink. However, if you supersize your order, your meal exceeds 1,400 calories!

But Wait, There's More

It's not hard to see how these changes translated into more people being overweight. It's all quite clear when you consider the "calories in versus calories out" equation: If you consume more calories than you expend, you gain weight. But the obesity epidemic is far more complex than simple math; in fact, it's shortsighted to include only food- and activity-related issues as the major contributors to the obesity problem. There is much more behind the obesity "perfect storm."

For example, increased stress and lack of sleep are both major players. And they are directly connected to one another: It's hard to sleep well when you are stressed-out, and you feel even more stressed when you're sleep deprived. It seems that everyone is battling intense job pressures in this ever-changing global economy, and some people are still struggling to make ends meet despite working more hours than ever. The human body is wired to go on full alert and kick into survival mode; this is commonly referred to as the fight-or-flight response. One hundred years ago, most jobs were physically demanding and provided a healthy outlet for stress, but today there are few natural outlets. If you're not making it to the gym regularly, the stress simply builds up, and chronic elevation of stress hormones has been implicated as a major factor in weight gain. High levels of stress lead to stress eating, a type of emotional eating that can wreak havoc with your food choices and your ability to discern real physical hunger from psychological hunger.

And on top of all that, chronic stress carries over into the night, interfering with both the quantity and quality of your sleep. This is bad news because studies have shown that people who get 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep each night are thinner than those who get fewer than 7 hours.

All of these factors have turned the health of modern day America into a vast "Waist Land." And while many questions remain about how to change the larger cultural picture, one thing appears certain: Simply going along with the ultraconvenient, supersedentary way of life is the fastest way to "supersize" yourself.

Have you ever wanted to sit on the couch in your living room with a trusted friend and talk about why diets don't work? Or why the diets you've tried over the years and lost 30, 50, even 100 pounds, worked for a time but then you gained it all back and perhaps even more? Maybe you want to talk with this friend about why you'd really like to lose weight but you just can't seem to get started. "Coach Yourself Thin" gives you the chance to sit down with Greg Hottinger and Michael Scholtz and hear from them as if you were hearing from a trusted friend. A trusted, reliable friend who really knows where you are, the obstacles you've faced and what you can realistically do to get past them once and for all. You'll hear their voices guiding you as you discover the road blocks in your thinking that keep you from your own success. Reading this book is similar to hearing them cheering you on as you take the first steps in creating life-long patterns of healthy eating and exercise that will not only help you lose weight and keep it off, but be healthy and safe all along the way. Because these authors are so well-trained and highly regarded in their respective fields of nutrition and exercise, their expertise and knowledge comes through loud and clear. But they never talk down to you, never offer jargon, and always, always provide clear, insightful steps you can take to create a new lifestyle for health. Like me, you may start out reading the book with some level of excitement about the idea of being "thin" again, based on the book's title. It's definitely eye-catching. But I'm betting that like me, you'll close the book - and come back to it, time and again - with excitement about being healthy and losing weight for the sake of being fit, feeling better, and living the life you desire. And feeling as if you've made two new friends who are helping you on the journey.

This is a MUST READ for anyone who is struggling or has struggled with weight issues and is ready to finally conquer their problems and start living a healthier lifestyle!!! This refreshing, insightful look at weight loss and how to successfully live a healthier active lifestyle was a pure pleasure to read! The diet industry is overrun with gimmicky, quick fix, magic pill or effortless diet plans. Those plans set you up to fail. I know, I think I have tried them all. Some I did lose weight with but I always managed to find it again¿. Instead, this book is an honest account of what it takes to succeed at losing weight, and keeping it off forever. This book is a valuable tool that everyone can learn from. While reading through the different chapters and steps I experienced so many ¿aha¿ moments it was almost surreal. It was as if they had crawled into my head and piece-by-piece they put this puzzle of my struggles together to reveal to me why I had failed in my efforts in the past. Then they laid out realistic attainable means of succeeding. I actually feel very empowered by this book! No hype, just a realistic path to change our perceptions and our relationship with food. This program successfully lays out guidelines and tools that can be used by everybody, no matter where you are in your journey to losing weight. It is not just about losing weight; they give a realistic guide on how to adopt a healthy active lifestyle and how to safely incorporate exercise as a part of your new healthier lifestyle. The tools they reveal to you as you read through the book is like having your own little personal life coach there to turn to when ever you need. They were very thorough in tackling issues and roadblocks that we all encounter when we make lifestyle changes. The most important thing I came away with from reading ¿Coach Yourself Thin¿ was the power that comes with knowledge and acceptance. I gained so much knowledge not only about the process but also about myself. A definite must read for anyone who truly wants to improve and change their life.

Yes, there is finally a book with some common sense about weight loss and healthy eating. First of all this is not a diet book. This is a book about a lifelong way of living that will help you be healthy. This book is filled with healthy ideas that will help you cut those calories to a number that your body can live with for a life. This book is not about quick fixes like the ones that tell you to eat some absurdly low amount of calories a day, because that is not a long term way of eating. Best of all, this book will help you will retrain your way of thinking about your relationship with food and your body. After losing 70 pounds and keeping it off with the help of these 2 gentlemen, I have discovered there is so much more I can do then I ever thought possible. I will recommend this book to everyone.

As I sat down to review this book, it brought back many memories of just how far I have come in the last 6 years. I was taken back to that time, and wanted to see how I would have responded, how someone who had tried it all, failed it all, had totally given up on ever changing her existence because it seemed there was not hope, and someone who had given up living, would read into the lines of this book. Yes, it was that bad. With the guidance of the authors I have gone from that person and 370 pounds, to a vibrant, healthy person. I have maintained a weight loss of over 100 lbs. More importantly, I worked with the authors as my coaches to use these same tools to make some huge changes in the last two years to ensure that I am in a more nurturing environment and with the right circle of support. I found the first three sections enlightening. Greg Hottinger and Michael Scholtz help you work through your obstacles, feeling of unworthiness, all or nothing thinking and help to find your way out of those thoughts and get on a healthier thought process. This is the part I, personally, tried to hide from, as it was so hard to face. The simple guidance in this book was up lifting, and hopeful. I know I will continue to use this book as my guide to review, and re-review time after time as life bops me across the head one more time in an effort to throw me off this healthy life. I love that they start with the mental game in such a reassuring manner. There are a few mental exercises to do that are simple, and really help get you to open your mind to the thought process needed to change your way of thinking and find a way to be truly serious about your journey to a healthier you. Even better, I feel these first sections have tools to use in every aspect of your life to lead to a healthier, happier, richer life. I know these words were written in relation to weight loss, but all aspects of our life; professional, relationships, hobbies, dreams; all add up to that healthy living and enjoying your life. I know that sounds corny, but I could see where Michael used these tools to help me out of some pretty rough life decisions and changes and all in a very nurturing way. In part 6, Greg and Michael pull together the tools referred to in the initial chapters of the book. These tools again, prepare you to change the ¿quick fix¿, all or nothing mentality that Society has ingrained in our psyche for the last 30 years. They help you to envision the possibilities, and set realistic goals and stepping stones to get you on a healthy pathway. The simple guidance for nutrition and exercise are wonderful. Simple, real, and is based on eating real foods. This is the part I find the most reassuring; that you can be successful eating real food. This was something I was looking for 6 years ago. I was tired of quick fixes, tired of the constant up and down in weight, and truly wanted to be able to have success within my ¿normal¿ life. I think this book will reset your thinking of ¿normal¿ and help you to realize just how easy some of the changes can be. This is not a book about quick fixes. Rather, it is about a way of life, and a way to get you out of some of the traps of the above mentioned obstacles. I suggest you start with small, baby steps. You don¿t have to do it all today. That would be all or nothing thinking. Every little step you take is a step in the right direction. Then enjoy the successes of that step.

Michael and Greg do an amazing job in this book to help you create a mindset shift to enable success. They are very realistic in the approach and try to guide the reader to realize there are no quick answers and that you will get the long term results based on the effort you put into it. They provide you with all of the tools necessary to shift your thinking and help you plan for the long term as the journey is for life, not just the next week, month or year. Take your time reading and re-read if something isn't clear, don't just give up. This will be your first step towards being happy for the rest of your life!!!

I have had the amazing opportunity of learning from the authors, both by reading articles they've written and through the one-on-one coaching I received online through the Biggest Loser Club. Since joining the Club and learning from the authors my life has been forever changed! With their help, I¿ve lost over 75 lbs and maintained it for 3+ years. More than that? They¿ve helped me to change my relationship with food, exercise and most importantly myself. After battling weight for years and trying every ¿quick fix¿ diet out there, I realized the only way to truly be successful with weight loss was to make it a lifestyle change. I have no doubt that I will be able to maintain a healthy weight for the rest of my life because of what I¿ve learned from the authors of this book. Coach Yourself Thin provides a comprehensive look into what it takes to create lasting change in your life. It outlines common obstacles we all face on our journeys to health, as well as steps you can take to break free and become the healthy person you¿ve always dreamed of becoming. Each section contains short quizzes, testimonials or ¿Ah-a¿ exercises to help with the concepts presented. The book is easy to understand and provides some practical guidelines to use in getting started. It is an amazing resource that you can go back to time and again, no matter where you are in your journey! So, if you are truly serious about losing weight and reclaiming your life, I highly recommend Coach Yourself Thin ¿ I know from experience - it works!

Coach Yourself Thin speaks to the soul and awakens the mind! It is truly a program that promotes the lifestyle changes you need to live a healthier, fulfilling life. A program that is easily followed without fancy gimmicks or products; it simply provides you with the "coaching" you need to make permanent changes that result in weight loss, better health and emotional well being. Real life examples make it personal and a program you can relate too. Coach Yourself Thin is the answer you have been looking for to finally make that lifestyle change for better health! I was truly inspired by this book! It is an easy read that opens your mind to finally making that lasting change. I have tried many different approaches to weight loss and getting healthy; however, the "coaching" approach in this book really retrains what you think about being healthy and your relationship with diet and fitness. Good health is so much more than a number on the scale, or a certain body image...through this book you discover the real reasons you aren't healthy or having trouble losing weight - the book then provides you with the tools and the path to finally achieve a healthy mind, body, and soul. I have worked with both Michael and Greg and know first hand the changes that can be made. My whole approach to life, food and exercise has been affected for the better and I am healthier than I have ever been. The "A-Ha sections in the book and the Seven Undermining Obstacles to weight loss" spoke to me more than any other program. Give yourself a gift this new year, read "Coach Yourself Thin" and open the door for a healthier you in 2012!

Terrific book! Love the balanced and long term approach to a healthier lifestyle and weight loss. The authors ask insightful questions and offer real life guidance to help an individual find what works for them. No set cookie cutter - quick fix diet here. One statement really stood out to me early on: "Your body's natural signals (like hunger, fatigue and pain) get progressive more difficult to hear amid the buzz created by caffeine, alcohol, sugar, fat and medications." Wow was that so true for me, and I find myself working toward listening to my body more and more. Guided by the concepts outlined in Coach Yourself Thin, and with the help of it's author's Greg and Michael, I am slowly able to make better food choices, increase my daily living activities and so far have lost more than 50 lbs. But more importantly (yes, I really did say more important than weight loss), I have achieved so many Non-scale victories like breathing better, walking soooo much more, biking and being more involved with nature in general. My diet has changed considerably to include more unprocessed foods and certainly a whole new variety of foods I would never have eaten before. The 80/20 approach has allowed for celebrations, slip ups and personal tastes without the guilt of yo yo dieting. I now look forward to a much healthier, thinner future and a more balanced lifestyle.

I¿ve read so many diet books about so many plans, and have dieted for so many years that I thought that I knew more about dieting than most people. But believe me when I say that Coach Yourself Thin taught me a lot that I never knew ... including some truths and insights about myself that have given me what I guess people call an "ah ha" moment. This book gets to the heart of my failures, and understanding is half the battle. After decades of battling my weight problem, I can really see what I¿ve been doing wrong all along. Even better ¿ this book doesn¿t just explain what caused me to fail, but tells me how to succeed! I wish that this was a testimony of how this book changed my life, but that will have to wait. But from reading the reviews of other people who have succeeded by following Greg and Michael¿s advice, I am full of hope and resolve.

Coach Yourself Thin is straightforward and most of all a "neighborly" kind of book-the type where you can sit on your front/back porch and with a cup of "green" tea see all the amazing wonders of exactly what makes a Healthy Lifestyle. It is concise, to the point, an easy read, gives you information to think, it challenges your mind whereby having you decide the proper path of nutrition and health that you wish to journey on and move forward; and it does this in such a way that these two gentlemen are right there on that porch with you and talking directly to YOU - doesn't that make you feel good!!! That is the pleasure I get from both Greg and Michael as I meet them on the Biggest Loser Club online website-they talk directly to ME!!! I have worked with them for 4 years now and I did lose close to 25 pounds with them-I am still on that path and will lose more and they will be there with me every step of the way and now with their new book I can meet them day after day knowing I can do even more to ensure that my journey of good health and lifestyle will be just perfect! I also had the chance to meet them a few months ago and it was wonderful. Just two regular men who want to give of their knowledge and make people feel good about themselves-helping to make choices to better one's lives and the lives of their family, to show that it doesn't require special foods, it doesn't require scientific data, it doesn't require minute to minute scurrying to get from here to there-it only requires YOU to have the desire of WANTING a healthy, happy life-to enjoy day to day living at it's fullest, to feel free, to look great, feel great, and live great-all by your little old lonesome self (didn't think you had it in you, right)and with these gentlemen by your side you will find that new life - I GUARANTEE IT!!!!! I am still in the midst of reading the book but finding great insightsn to keep wanting to read more and more and then to go back and read it all over again-this will stay with me and guide me on my journey, the journey that never quits - so how about joining me on that journey-let's you and I sit on that porch, have a cup of "green" tea, and discover this healty, happy lifestyle that Greg and Michael have set out for us-sound good??? Then what are you waiting for-let's GO!!!!!!

I, as many of you, looked for the "magic" pills or food combo or fad diet, ANYTHING to lose the weight that had held me back for years. If that is what you are looking for, this would NOT be the book for you. This book is the "Real Deal". It teaches you how to find the "root" of the problems that have made, and are keeping, you unhealthy. Michael and Greg have structured this book in a way that if YOU do the work, you WILL succeed! You must find what your roadblocks are, and work towards your "Ah-Ha" moment that will finally put you on the road to a healthy lifestyle. I have worked with Greg and Michael for more than 3 years now, and I am so happy that they wrote this book. Because now that their coaching has helped me learn so much about myself and the behaviors that were keeping me overweight, I have lost and kept off over 100 pounds for over 20 months. And to now with this book, it is like having my coaches in my back pocket. The teachings in this book showed me that a healthy lifestyle is just that...LIFE! It is not a diet that is OVER when you see a certain number on a scale, or fit into that certain outfit. NO! It is learning to live and be your healthiest and best YOU! So if you are ready to FINALLY deal with the truth that there is NOT a "Quick-Fix" to getting healthy, this book has all of the tools you need to help get you there.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that ¿Coach Yourself Thin¿ is a valuable resource for anyone interested in improving their overall health, regardless of whether they are already at an optimal weight, or are under or overweight. The title made me think that the book would be geared towards people whose goal was to be thin which was frankly not what I would be looking for. As it turned out this book quickly makes it clear that: watching the scales, severe calorie restrictions, and new exhausting exercise programs are NOT what they recommend. Instead, the book is structured to help the reader set their own individual goals for achieving a healthier lifestyle, and provides them with the tools to achieve, modify, and sustain those goals. Although this book is geared towards readers who want to lose weight, the content would be equally useful for someone who is already at an appropriate weight or is underweight. The emphasis is on building self confidence in healthy ways and on achieving adequate nutrition and exercise for the individual. As an all or nothing person, I was glad to see a chapter that dealt specifically with "all or nothing thinking". I also found the exercise philosophy stating that: "The key is to balance your expectations with your abilities, limitations, and motivation" to be particularly applicable to me. In short, I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for practical information to help them improve their general health through adequate nutrition, exercise, and a positive outlook.

I love the no nonsense approach. This book is an excellent guide to help figure out your weeknesses and tools to overcome them. It helped me to realize a thing or two about myself that now that I know them, I'll be able to make the changes I need to make to stop blocking myself from my own success. This is not a lose weight quick scheme and it's setup to help everyone, beginners and those with more experience. It's a realisic approach to changing your lifestyle in order to be a healthier indivdual for life. I can't wait to re-read this book so that I can do the "A-ha" exercises! Thanks Greg and Mike!

Greg Hottinger and Michael Scholtz realize that there is no diet plan or exercise regimen that is one size fits all. To that end, their book "Coach Yourself Thin" teaches you how to take control of your own life in order to achieve a healthier lifestyle - by writing a vision of what you want to achieve, by realistically looking at what you can and cannot achieve given time constraints, by eliminating old mindsets that serve as barriers to making healthy decisions, and by replacing those old mindsets with newer, healthier ones. They teach you how to create a support network, deal with people who sabotage your diet, and focus on other ways to measure your progress rather than the number you see on the scale. The book has a substantial chapter on creating a nutritional plan and another equally substantial chapter on creating an exercise regimen, both of which you can tailor to your own personal needs. In all, this book is a useful guide for helping people empower themselves to make healthier choices for lasting results.

Like many people I have spent years struggling with my weight and trying one diet after another. A journey that began a few years ago led me to Michael Scholtz and Greg Hottinger the authors of ¿Coach Yourself Thin¿. Through the techniques taught in their book they have successfully managed to turn my way of thinking around. The journey isn¿t about the number on the scale. The journey is about feeling healthy and being physically active and capable of being actively engaged in life. Understanding the value of accountability, trust, forgiveness, and many other important factors help you to make this a lifestyle change and not just another diet. The book is a very valuable resource. It is filled with great information as well as activities that help you to understand the need to look beyond the number. If you are ready to undertake the journey of a lifestyle change then this is the book to get you going and help you with that process.

I like this book; it ¿speaks to my condition,¿ as the Quakers say. Greg and Michael present helpful information in a clear manner. They don¿t offer any quick-loss hype, they don¿t present any miracle solutions, and they don¿t say losing weight will be painless using their methods. What they do say is that losing weight can be done, and that healthful eating and healthy movement must become a way of life. We all know that we must eat less and move more. Greg and Michael give us the tools to use to make this a reality. I especially like the ¿Thinking Shift¿ sections, the ¿A-ha Exercises,¿ and the idea of trying different behaviors for three days to see how they fit. Three days is small enough to seem doable, and long enough to require our commitment and perhaps show some results. I like the combination of instructions and free choice that the authors offer. They give enough information to show exactly how to do something, yet they make it clear that the reader makes the choice about what to do. The book is filled with many more helpful tools, like the 80/20 philosophy, quizzes to help us discover our obstacles, and the five stepping-stones to change. They remind us that even though the scales might not change immediately, we can look to how we feel, how our clothes fit, whether or not we are following the guidelines and ways to tweak our behaviors as we go through our daily life. After reading this book, I feel as though I have a real chance to lose the excess weight and become healthier. I have already started to change my thoughts and behaviors in small ways. This is definitely a book to keep in your mental toolbox¿it¿s a keeper!

It is so nice to finally see a book that is focused more on health and wellness rather than society and media ideas of what a body should be. In all honesty, If I saw this book on the shelf at the bookstore, I might not get past the cover or the title. That said, the information is presented in a way that makes me want to use the information, not just read it and toss it aside. Thanks Michael and Greg!

What these authors offer through their perspective, their coaching and the exercises offered throughout this book is nothing short of life changing!! I know, from experience - having lost 125 pounds with their help - and having kept it off for 4 years now! If you are willing to do the work to look inside yourself, using the book as a guide, to find (and work on) the obstacles that are holding you back from losing weight and enjoying the life you deserve, then I wholeheartedly believe that you won't find yourself needing to look at another diet book or plan EVER again! It's been 4 years since I lost my weight and I'm now living my life, happily, and doing things I never thought possible! Best of all, I've ended my battle with yo-yo diets. This book will give you all of the tools you need. I can't recommend Coach Yourself Thin highly enough, to anyone who struggles with weight or wants to become healthier! It is by far the most empowering book I've ever read, on any topic! Some quick thoughts on the tone of the book - I loved the flow. It is easy to read and almost conversational in nature. The authors made their points very clearly, using powerful examples that really brought their concepts home. On top of all of this, the light humor they slipped in here and there was fun. I felt like the authors were in the same room, coaching me, at many points! I found myself shaking my head in agreement, and understanding myself even better, with each paragraph I read. I love the way they provide real world solutions to the variety of challenges we face as we attempt to shift to a healthier way of living - addressing everything from the environment we live in, to our typically hectic schedules. The real power of this book lies in how they are able to help us to find insight into the obstacles that hold us back from losing weight in the first place. After all, how many of us have thought that we could probably TEACH a course on weightloss . . . so why is it so hard to JUST DO IT - to follow our own advice?! It's our obstacles! The authors delve into 7 major weight loss obstacles that each of us may or may not face - giving us quick surveys to use to evaluate how much of a role each one plays for us. I recognize SO many of these and I know exactly which ones held me back for so many years - I distinctly remember my many A-ha moments and the resulting breakthroughs. I think this section is absolutely invaluable. With this book, you'll not only learn to identify your own obstacles, but you'll have the tools you need at your fingertips to create your own breakthroughs! It will take some work on your part, but it is worth it! You may have noticed I haven't touched on nutrition or exercise yet?! That's because I'm out of room on this review! But don't worry; Coach Yourself Thin has it all! The authors provide comprehensive sections on both and teach us to build and adapt our own program, to what works for us, taking into consideration our own strengths, weaknesses and likes. I'll say it again; I can't recommend this book highly enough!! If you are sick of the same `ol plans and empty promises, and if you are ready to put some real work into yourself, then this book WILL show you how to take back your life and lose the weight for good! Since they've helped me change my thinking and adopt a healthy lifestyle I've taken off 125#'s and kept it off for 4 years. In 2010 I completed an Ironman. That alone was worth the work!

Coach Yourself Thin takes a different approach to weight loss than other books I've read on the subject. It will be a great reference book to go back to again and again for guidance. There are lots of quizzes designed to make the reader think about their own mindsets and what they need to change to be successful. Having had the privilege of working with both Michael Scholtz and Greg Hottinger for almost four years I've been able to see many of the attitude changes that I've been able to make. With their help I've reached my goal weight and maintained it for over two years. I can see years of work and experience that have gone into the making this book one that can be an asset to anyone of any age or circumstance ready to create a healthier lifestyle for themselves. There are so many tools to help customize a plan that is workable for whatever your circumstances are. There is help for creating achievable goals for both eating habits and exercise. I believe that each time through the book will reveal new information I didn't see on the first reading. It will be a great tool for me to add to my arsenal to help me maintain my new healthy weight and fitness level. The exercise plans are outlined in such a way that you can customize them for beginners as well as those more advanced. They can be made to "grow" with you. The food plans use everyday foods readily available. Plus you learn as you go so that you will be able to maintain the new lifestyle you build for yourself.

Yes - it can! Combine the right portions of good, whole foods, add a moderate amount of exercise - who would have thought?! In this book, Greg and Michael give you the tools to start your journey of self-discovery, create and become your vision of an active, healthy lifestyle, and yes, lose weight too. If you're ready for the challenge, you're in for the journey of a life-time and the authors will be beside you every step of the way. There are no quick fixes here - no one will tell you that you must eat "this" or exercise "that" way. And no one will tell you that you'll reach your goal weight on a specific date (yes - I do know of at least one plan that does that). Just know that this is a process that takes time, and that's okay because you're creating a lifestyle. There is no deadline. In my head, I can hear Michael and Greg reminding me that weightloss is a marathon; not a sprint. It's SO true. Under Greg and Michael's guidance I've lost a little over 50 lbs and maintained that for two years. Under their guidance I was able to move from the shock of a diabetes diagnosis to managing it without any medication in just over a year. Under their guidance I've regained my life. I will always consider this book one of my most valued resources.

After so many diet programs and guides, one does become disheartened. However, finally a book comes along that makes sense! Hottinger and Scholtz developed a portable healthy lifestyle toolbox for real people. I am a real person. I know that change comes from within. I know that it is my perspectives and previous experiences that must be re-trained in order to achieve a happy path. Guess what, Coach Yourself Thin enables you to do just that adjustment. If you don't retrain yourself, you will always get what you have always gotten. This portable toolbox provides insights, tools, menus, understanding that I found invaluable. Not only am I "wowed" but CYT has found its way around our house already! Ready to empower yourself? CYT is the way!
