Description: This book is written mainly for speech-language pathologists working in the field of early intervention with the communicatively handicapped. It is designed to cover assessment and intervention with not only the individual but also with the family, which is so important in this particular population.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a framework for assessing the communication abilities and providing adequate intervention in the birth to three population. It is written to provide the rationale for a particular intervention type which is a worthy objective for early interventionists who are usually incorporated into multidisciplinary teams. The book only focuses on the birth to three population which makes it a great reference for early interventionists.
Audience: It is written for practicing professionals in speech pathology or special education. It can also be used as a course text or reference in a pediatric language impairments or early intervention course. The author is an associate professor at Buffalo State College and presents extensive, helpful information on both assessment and intervention.
Features: The book is divided into two main sections, assessment and intervention. The first four chapters provide information on early assessment of the communication abilities of infants and toddlers and the last four chapters cover intervention focusing on the professional and the parent-caregiver relationships. The book is designed well and is very easy to follow and use as a quick reference for an educator or practitioner. The case studies are excellent tools to summarize and allow the reader to integrate the information presented in the chapters. The pictures and illustrations are clear and appropriate. The intervention plans presented for the case studies clearly state communication outcomes or goals and how to design an appropriate plan. It is extremely helpful that the author has included the rationales for intervention options which assist anyone involved in trans-disciplinary teams and planning.
Assessment: Although similar to other materials in the field of early intervention, the book is organized in a convenient manner and includes more pertinent and helpful case studies. It is also written in a way that is pedagogical for practitioners/educators and understandable for a parent-caregiver first exposed to speech and language impairments.
