Description: This aptly titled book addresses comprehensive care of transgender patients.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive, general resource that medical providers can briefly reference when taking care of transgender patients. This is a practical and timely objective, although, aside from the heavy emphasis on surgery, I am not sure how this book sets itself apart from other publications on the subject matter. Nevertheless, the book meets the objectives well and will be easy to use and reference by those in search of a passing glance on the subject.
Audience: The book indicates it is aimed at providers, but does not specify the level or specialty. It is certainly appropriate for primary care providers seeking information on the natural history of the medical and surgical care for transgender patients; however, the chapters on gender affirming surgeries (8-11, 14) may be too detailed for medical providers and likely not detailed enough for surgical providers, so the audience is unclear. The author and contributors are well recognized in the field.
Features: The book and chapter titles are appropriate and explicit, which is useful in a general reference resource. The pictures and tables are well placed and necessary; however the surgical chapters (8-11) may be better served by consolidating pictures into several referenced pages since it was difficult to read the sets of pages where there were several pictures in line with text.
Assessment: This book is well written and comprehensive. The ideal audience is unclear since the detail and scope of each section do not specify who would benefit most. Is it primary or secondary health providers who happen to take care of transgender patients for non-gender related issues, or is it providers who are ultimately interested in providing specific specialized care for transgender patients?
