Description: This book presents concepts that encourage critical thinking for use with diverse client groups and clinical settings.
Purpose: The purpose is to review and present the forces that have shaped current nursing practice and analyze themes that influence contemporary nursing practice.
Audience: Previous editions targeted RN-BSN completion programs, but the editors have expanded this fourth edition to make it appropriate for foundational courses in basic baccalaureate programs as well as for core courses in graduate nursing programs.
Features: Part 1 of the book's three parts considers historical events that have shaped nursing practice and education, and includes the socialization of nurses and the various roles that have emerged over time. It also describes theories and frameworks for professional practice as well as topics of health policy, economics, and healthcare delivery. Part 2 covers communication with clients, peers, and organizations. Legal and ethical issues are described and an update on nursing informatics is provided. Part 3 presents concepts related to diverse populations, health promotion, and alternative complementary practices. Three new chapters have been added on rural health, violence, and vulnerable populations. Learning objectives begin each chapter. Research findings and critical thinking exercises related to each concept are integrated into each chapter and selected web sites are presented.
Assessment: This book includes the typical concepts for a foundation text, but the new chapters on rural health, violence as a health problem, and vulnerable populations moves it into the 21st century. It is a user friendly book with many interactive components.
