Overview

As reflected in the title, the purpose of this book is to guide clinicians in understanding and treating youth with severe antisocial behavior. Children and adolescents with conduct disorders operate at quite a high cost to society. In many opinion polls, juvenile crime and violence is rated as one of the most pressing concerns for many in our society. This widespread concern has prompted professionals from many disciplines to search for more effective interventions to prevent and treat youth with such disorders. This book is my attempt to summarize the current status of this very important endeavor. In providing this guide to clinicians, I have attempted to emphasize the critical link between understanding the clinical presentation, course, and causes of conduct disorders and designing effective interventions for children and adolescents with these disorders. Many past books, book chapters, and review articles have emphasized one or the other of these objectives. Some have provided excellent summaries of the vast amount of research on youth with conduct disorders without explicitly and clearly describing the clinical applications of this research. Others have focused on the implementation of specific interventions for youth with conduct disorders that is divorced from a basic understanding of the many diverse and clinically important characteristics of this population. The overriding theme of this book is that successful clinical inter­ vention requires an integration of both bodies of knowledge.

As part of the Clinical Child Psychology Library Series, this book focuses on the diagnosis of conduct disorder. It summarizes the current definitions, theories of causation, and intervention strategies for this disorder. The author intends to guide clinicians in their understanding of youths with antisocial behaviors. Further, he attempts to link developmental theory with treatment interventions. Although a worthy objective, the general study of conduct disorder is still a relatively new venture. As such, the field is not sufficiently advanced to present a comprehensive picture. Rather, this book offers a snapshot of the state of previously published research. In the meantime this field of study continues to advance at a rapid rate. This book presents a good introduction to conduct disorder for the student and clinician. It gives simple summaries of some complex research. The author places his own research on behavior disorders within this context of diagnosis and treatment. He discusses the definition of conduct disorder and possible subtypes and places the disorder in a developmental context, suggesting methods for diagnosing and treating youths with antisocial behaviors. The tables present a quick summary of research and clinical tools without getting caught up in the more sophisticated research questions. This is a good book for beginners interested in finding out more about the topic of conduct disorders and severe antisocial behavior. However, as this is a relatively recent area of study that is currently receiving a good deal of attention (See the Handbook of Antisocial Behavior by Stoff et al. (John Wiley & Sons, 1997) for a review of currentresearch), it can only present some general directions in a changing field of study. In order to gain a more detailed understanding of the assessment or treatment of these behaviors, the reader will need to go to other sources noted in the book.

After an overview of the basic nature and symptoms of aggressive and antisocial behavior, the author discusses major causal factors, how they can be organized into comprehensive theoretical models that can be used to guide intervention, and the role of psychological testing in developing a clear case conceptualization that can point the way to individualized treatment.
