Purpose: The goal is to provide a review of the core concepts of parenchymal diseases affecting the kidney.
Audience: This book would be an excellent tool for residents, renal fellows, general nephrologists, and internists.
Features: The 27 chapters begin with a basic overview of the general approach to the diagnosis and management of glomerular diseases. The remaining chapters cover the major glomerular diseases, providing concise though complete descriptions of the diseases supplemented by tables of treatment strategies, pathology slides where appropriate, and references. The book appears to provide the core concepts by touching upon major genes, antibodies, pathophysiology, and therapies available for glomerular disease. It also covers diseases in children and pregnant women, and includes a chapter on tropical infectious diseases and the kidney. A basic understanding of glomerular terminology, genes, antibodies, and antigens will make for an easier read in a limited amount of time. Certain areas could use some improvement, including using treatment algorithms and charts when feasible and depicting causes and complications in a tabular format.
Assessment: The book does deliver what the title promises, reviewing core concepts relevant to glomerular diseases. The inclusion of novel markers, genes, and antibodies known to play a role in these diseases adds to the appeal.
