Overview

These 27 songs were recorded between 1959 and 1963, although all but six were done on the evening of April 13, 1963, taped by Barry Olivier at Olivier's Berkeley, CA home. It's just Slim and his guitar, singing a wide variety of songs he learned, mostly about cowboy life as described in song prior to the advent of motion pictures. He's got a low-key, even-tempered voice, and the ambience is that of a singer entertaining friends, which was exactly the set-up at Olivier's house. Exciting? No, but it's a good representation of cowboy music in its unadorned, traditional state. ~ Richie Unterberger
