Author Johnson displays his erudition and wit and manages (usually) to supress his conservative Catholic biases in his enthusiastc treatment of Dürer, Hokusai, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Austen, Twain, Tiffany, and others. His admiration for entreprenureal expertise comes through in his articles on fashion designers Balenciaga and Dior, and especially Disney. A definite bonus is the in-depth treatment the author gives to such technology as printmaking (Dürer), glass making (Tiffany), and fashion design and dressmaking (Balenciaga), particularly since his knowledge seems so intimate as to transcend mere library research. His more negative assessments of Hugo and Picasso are well worth reading, but perhaps less entertaining. His least persuasive essay is that on Walt Disney, not that Disney was lacking in creative energy, versatility,or influence, but because Johnson credits him especially for championing Nature. The author acknowledges that Uncle Walt anthropomorphized animals, but he sees that as a plus, and he ignores the sentimentalizing and sugar- coating of Nature that is sometimes appropriately nicknamed 'Disneyfying.' He apparently does not see that to give human emotions and attitudes to other animals is to falsify. This is the sort of book that may send you looking for more about J.S. Bach, Tiffany, or some of the others. You already know more than enough about Walt Disney.
