Overview

"An unforgettable historical, high-octane adventure." — Dav Pilkey, author/illustrator of the Dog Man series

It's 1863 and dinosaurs roam the streets of New York as the Civil War rages between raptor-mounted armies down South. Magdalys Roca and her friends from the Colored Orphan Asylum are on a field trip when the Draft Riots break out, and a number of their fellow orphans are kidnapped by an evil magistrate, Richard Riker.

Magdalys and her friends flee to Brooklyn and settle in the Dactyl Hill neighborhood, where black and brown New Yorkers have set up an independent community—a safe haven from the threats of Manhattan. Together with the Vigilance Committee, they train to fly on dactylback, discover new friends and amazing dinosaurs, and plot to take down Riker. Can Magdalys and the squad rescue the rest of their friends before it's too late?

Dactyl Hill Squad is a short and easy-to-read fantastical tale set in the midst of the U.S. Civil War in a world where dinosaurs still roam the earth, now as man’s servant. Although lacking in underlying theme and intricacies, we are presented with an interesting and unique setting that opens a window to an alternate past in which ancient creatures play an active part in our modern history. The author, Daniel Jose Older, tosses us into a series of perfectly chaotic scenes where our protagonist, Magdalys, a rebellious and impulsive girl with a natural talent for communicating with the abundant dinosaurs of the time must seek shelter and fight alongside her fellow orphans to escape the Kidnapping Club. This corrupt league is focused on tearing free African Americans from the streets of New York and selling them to slavers in the Confederacy. Will Magdalys and her friends elude the clutches of the Club or are they fated to fall short of freedom? Reviewed by Daniel O, 14, Southwest Mensa

Set in New York City during the waning days of the Civil War, the story revolves around a group of kids who have lost their home and are fighting to save their friends from the evil and dangerous Knights of the Golden Circle who are part of a huge international slave trading operation. This is a thrilling historical fantasy that will have middle grade readers thoroughly engrossed. Domesticated dinosaurs and pterodactyls feature big in the story. Magdalys Roca is the main character and she’s a great one. She has heart and sheer determination as she leads her friends on their daring mission. There’s a lot of action taking place over the course of a few days and there is some violence. The author has included a section of notes at the rear of the book that covers things like the historical aspects of the storyline and the types and characteristics of the dinosaurs. The ending perfectly sets the stage for a sequel.
