Overview

Decked with Holly by Marni Bates

Holly Dayton is about to go way out of her comfort zone. . .

Spending Christmas vacation on a cruise with her two cousins from hell isn't Holly's idea of a good time. And when in a moment of seasick-fueled desperation she lurches into an open suite—she's greeted with an eyeful of pepper spray. The culprit? A gorgeous guy calling himself Nick. But when Holly goes to make her exit, she gets the shock of her life: a corridor crammed with screaming teenage fans. Because Nick just happens to be Dominic Wyatt, drummer for ReadySet—one of the hottest bands in America.

Suddenly rumors are swirling, and Holly's face is captured on countless phones and plastered all over the Internet. But the band can't risk a scandal destroying their family-friendly image, so Dominic convinces Holly to be his fake girlfriend—just for two weeks. How bad could it be to be fauxmantically involved with one of the cutest rockstars on the planet? Holly's about to find out. . .

"Fans of Meg Cabot will find Marni's voice equally charming and endearing."—Julie Kagawa, New York Times bestselling author

Confession: I'm a self-professed Christmas-aholic. And I had heard wonderful things about Marni's book Awkward, and decided Decked with Holly would be an ideal book for me to try out. Decked with Holly turned out to be a magical, funny and endearing book that reminded me why I love contemporaries in the first place. It's a great book to pick up over the holiday season! REASONS TO READ: 1. Laugh-out-loud funny: I've mentioned before that I have a very picky sense of humour, and I'm not typically a fan of comedy.   BUT Decked with Holly was one of those rare exceptions that had me laughing out loud on the subway! The writing is sharp and witty, and I loved the bantering back and forth between Nick and Holly. 2. Slow-moving, natural romance: Two BIG thumbs up for romance that doesn't start right away from eyes meeting across a room by chance. I loved the way Nick and Holly slowly grew closer together, and that they weren't always close from the beginning. It felt very real and natural and there wasn't anything forced about it at all. 3. A few heartbreaking elements: But the book isn't just fluff either - it's hard hitting in its own ways. Holly's life is far from perfect, and her relationship (even just a friendship) with Nick is difficult. As is Nick's own life. Yet none of it takes away from the story, as much as it deepens it even further.  The dual point of view didn't work for me so well at first though, and it took a little while for Nick's and Holly's voices to feel distinct from each other - however, once they did, it was great to see the different perspectives on the same events. That ended up working very well for the story, because it makes it easier to understand how easily things can be misconstrued.  And I really wish it had been a bit longer - it was light and fun, but I think the romance especially deserved a bit more fleshing out to really nail it. Mostly towards the ending, when everything was coming all together and being wrapped up.  ARC received from publisher for my honest review; no other compensation was received.

This book was amazing. Holly went through so many emotions as did Nick. The two point of views are great and twists you don't expect. Who doesn't love a happily ever after ? It does leave you wanting more of the story.

Having a special birthday celebration might be fun, if it didn't include Holly's cousins, Aunt and Uncle. They always made her feel out of place and not quite family.  Still it was grandpa's 75th birthday and he might not have many more, so Holly agreed to go along with plans.  Trying to save money to buy new clothes, Holly was willing to take almost any job.  It's a shame the one she chose came with it's own set of problems.  Thank goodness she has her best friend Jen to help her through it all.  The law of averages says Holly is due to have a break of good luck. She's hoping it happens soon.      First I must admit I chose this book based solely on the title. I don't usually do that, but since I have a Holly of my own, wanted to peek into "that" mind a bit. *smile*  This one is a fun read for anyone but teens will find it especially fun.  Light-hearted, cute and what every pre-teen, teen, dreams of.  It's characters are normal teens. Nothing perfect or minus flaws. The story is one believable in our world of anything goes.  The laughs will come easy as will the tears. Enjoy it as much as I did.      I found no issues with this one.     I gave this one 5 out of 5 books because the smiles, laughter and yes even the tears were worth the trip through these pages.   ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~

A holiday cruise turns into romantic hijinx for Holly when she accidentally gets mistaken for the newest girlfriend of indie rock band ReadySet's drummer, Dominic. In an effort to salvage ReadySet's family friendly image, Holly agrees to go along with the fauxmance for the duration of her forced family vacation. But as Dominic and Holly are compelled by circumstance to spend the holidays getting to know one another as they visit exotic ports of call, navigate family outings, and deal with relentless press and jealous fans, will they find their public performance becoming something far more personal? Appropriate for readers thirteen and up, fans of Marni Bates will enjoy this hilarious and sweet holiday story set in the same continuity as Bates' Awkward and 2013's highly anticipated sequel, Invisible.

Decked with Holly is another cute read from Marni Bates. In this novel, we've got Holly Dayton, a 17 year old orphan who lives with her grandfather. For christmas, her grandfather decides to take her as well as his other daughter's family on an 8 day cruise to Mexico. Her aunt, along with her two daughters, are typical bullies masked in designer clothes, calorie counting, and makeup. In other words, the cruise is an 8 day vacation in hell. To Holly's delight, and Dominic's misfortune, they get photographed together while she was leaving his room after getting using his bathroom to rid herself of her seasickness. This is when the story really moves. Dominic is a member of the band ReadySet. If you've read Awkward by Marni Bates then you'll remember him from there. The tabloids accuse him of hitting this mystery woman (Holly), and in order to kill the rumors he strikes a deal with her to be his fake-girlfriend. From here on out, we all know the direction the novel will take, even the misunderstandings that occur on whether the behavior of the other person is for the cameras or there is some hint of real feelings behind it. Since this novel is told from both Holly and Dominic's POVs you get to see how each one of them really feels and you just want to smack them and tell them to just get on with it and get together already. While the back and forth banter between Dominic and Holly was very cute and resulted in a ton of funny situations, I just hoped we spent more time with them really talking or just any awkward situations to occur because staying in the same suite as your fake-boyfriend or fake-girlfriend HAS to cause some red-face inducing situations right? I also really wanted to know how Dominic did with his new venture of lyric writing. He's also known as the Drummer of ReadySet but he took this vacation to write and relax. I've read the beginning of one of his lyrics and it sounded fun! I hoped that Bates gave us a bit more on what happened with the song he composed and how it was received by his bandmates and management. The ending of Decked With Holly is predictable, but that's something to expect from a contemporary romance genre. While throughout reading the novel I found myself skipping a few descriptive paragraphs here and there and wanting to read more dialogue between the characters, I really did enjoy it. Decked With Holly, in my opinion, wasn't as enjoyable as Awkward, however it was an overall great novel that I am sure fans of Marni Bates and cute contemporary novels in general wouldn't want to miss out on!
