Protection leads to passion in New York Times bestselling author Susan Stoker’s dangerously hot Mountain Mercenaries adventure.

Dispatched to the Dominican Republic to rescue a kidnapped child, former Marine Archer “Arrow” Kane makes a startling discovery: another hostage—Morgan Byrd, a very beautiful and very well-known missing person who disappeared off the streets of Atlanta a year ago. She’s brave, resilient, and unbroken. All Arrow wants to know is why she ended up in a shack in Santo Domingo. All he feels is the desire to protect.

Morgan is done being the victim and is determined to find out who hates her so much that they want her gone—but not dead. Until then, she has Arrow, an alpha stranger who’s offering a warm and safe place to hide. But as the passion between them flares, so does the fear that whoever took Morgan will do anything to get her back. For Arrow, protecting this woman with a mysterious enemy is the most dangerous mission of his life. And it’s worth every beat of his heart.

No matter which series of Susan Stoker you read, everyone of her stories is as intense as the previous one and as captivating as the next one! There’s something very addictive and seductive about Susan Stoker’s various series of courageous and brave soldiers, their fight for justice and the fierce protectiveness of their loved ones. “Defending Morgan”, book three in the Mountain Mercenary Series, is another great write, bringing marine Arrow Kane to the rescue of kidnapped victim Morgan Byrd. An operation that was supposed to be the extraction of a kidnapped child, takes Arrow and his team members into the mysterious kidnapping of Morgan, who is protecting the very child that the Mountain Mercenaries are tasked to rescue. A kidnapping that draws Arrow and Morgan together as they fight against an unknown enemy bent on killing Morgan. Susan Stoker is one fine writer that I was glad to have come upon and enjoyed reading her stories. From her Badge Of Honor Series, Delta Force Heroes Series to Seal Of Protection Series and now to Ace Security series, I’ve literally enjoyed every single one of her books. Protecting Caroline, Protecting Fiona and Protecting Alabama are my top favorites of her books that I’ve visited innumerable times…chicken soup for the soul!!! Received an ARC from Montlake Romance via NetGalley for an honest review.

Susan Stoker managed to keep me on the edge of my seat once again with Defending Morgan. Being held captive in a foreign country, being abused and violated for over a year, Morgan was still protecting a young girl who had been kidnapped from her mom. Archer is sent to find the little girl but gets an enormous surprise when he discovers Morgan is there too and there is no doubt that he will be taking her with him too. I loved Archer and Morgan's tale and couldn't put this book down.

As always, Susan Stoker has crafted another great story. "Rescue" books are one of my favorite genres and this book is a quintessential "rescue" book. Drama, suspense, and romance -- three things that, in my opinion, make enhance each other, especially when they are presented as in Defending Morgan. I also appreciated the approach taken regarding what Morgan went through while a captive. Details are given tastefully, allowing the reader an idea of what happened without going into extreme detail. The ladies from the previous books also make an appearance and are very supportive in Morgan's recovery process. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the "rescue" book genre, as well as to those who just enjoy a good story.

Books don’t get any better than this exhilarating edge of seat romance where protection leads to passion. Arrow and Morgan are strong, vivid characters that come to life as they draw readers into their story with their blistering chemistry and scorching passion. Arrow is a sexy, former SEAL that makes heart pound in desire while Morgan is a strong, courageous woman that readers can identify with and most would love to take her place beside Arrow. The relationship is full of emotional turmoil that stems from Morgan ordeal and from Arrow’s issue with the situation which tugs at heartstrings and warms the heart with the sweetness and intensity of the relationship blossoming between them. The story has a fast pace that keeps the adrenaline pumping suspense building throughout ensuring that readers don’t want to miss not one little detail. Mountain Mercenaries form a rough and sexy group of alpha males that make wonderful book boyfriends and choosing just one of them would be extremely hard but Arrow may just be the one to edge in front of the others as he takes on his most dangerous mission of his life. Readers can help but become embroiled in the suspense that takes place nor can they hold back their surprise during the unexpected turn of events that take place during the conclusion of this exhilarating read.

This is another wonderful read from Susan Stoker and her Mountain Mercenaries. I have read all of the series of the various law enforcement/military/mercenary heroes and the strong women they fall in love with. It is a great read with a little mystery involved which places it in a suspense category but the romantic aspects, especially the strong bonds the characters form are all about the HEA and believing in true love, regardless of the imperfections that we all have...I will continue to devour these books and praise Ms. Stoker for her creativity.

A roller coaster of a ride right from page one as Archer aka Arrow ends up in the Dominican to rescue a kidnapped little girl and ends up with Morgan during the rescue as well. Morgan has been missing for a year, vanished from the U.S. and her dad has been in the spotlight, pleading for her return not letting the public forget her, that’s how Arrow knows who she is once she tells him her identity. Now he has to get her out as well, away from the kidnappers and out of the country. He will need all his resources and help from his boss to make it happen...will they come out on the other side and find out who was behind it? Oh my my my my what an amazing read with steam, action, betrayal, and a tale of abuse that may be a trigger for some. A roller coaster of a ride with emotions that had me up, then down, then up again throughout the read. The strength and determination, the vulnerabilty, the fight that Morgan has left in her after everything she went through and yet would protect those weaker around her with a fierceness and putting herself in the line of Arrow, be still my heart for this mercenary, his compassion and protectiveness towards Morgan....left me in a puddle of goo...and his patience with Morgan’s issues....swoon, swoon, swoon. A read that had me turning the pages from the beginning, not wanting to put it down, the action and suspense keeping me on the edge of my seat, the emotions that had me misty eyed and a twist I didn’t see coming.....highly recommended read. *I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*

When Archer "Arrow" Kane and his group, the Mountain Mercenaries, go to the Dominican Republic to rescue a kidnapped child, they are amazed to find a woman, Morgan, who has been missing for a year, protecting the child. After they successfully return to the US with their charges, the hunt for finding out who had Morgan kidnapped, begins. This is the 3rd book in the Mountain Mercenaries series and it's probably considered a stand-alone but I think you should read the previous books as characters from those books are mentioned in this one. I enjoyed reading Arrow and Morgan's story. There's danger and intrigue, Insta-love, some light smexy-times, and really great characters. *Please note possible trigger warnings as this book deals with kidnapping, violence, and year-long assault (though the author does not go into explicit detail, there is some and it is mentioned/alluded to multiple times).* I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Montlake, via NetGalley. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias.

This is book 3 in the Mountain Mercenaries series and I would absolutely read the first 2 before reading this one. Or at least the last one because the epilogue of that book leads into this one. This one is about Archer “Arrow” Kane and Morgan Byrd. Morgan, as we saw at the end of the last book, had been kidnapped and missing for over a year when Arrow and his team came across her. And he is bound and determined to get her home and safe no matter what. While doing that, he not only discovers that she is one of the strongest women he has ever met but that there might be more to her kidnapping that any of them originally thought. I absolutely loved this book! Morgan is definitely beyond strong! She has been through things that no woman should ever have to go through and when the situation becomes worse, she still manages to step up and try to protect a little girl. Throw in the circumstances of her kidnapping and the things that happen once she is home? And this woman has more fortitude in her little finger than most people have in their whole families!! Arrow definitely lives up to the creed for the team that he is a part of. And even knowing that he wants to protect someone beyond anything, he still manages to be the kind of man I like who can step back and let someone make the decisions that are best for them. Regardless of what his own personal feelings may be. I loved them both! Their characters and story suck you in from the start and it definitely made it so I couldn't put this book down until I finished it! I can't wait to see where the rest of the team's stories take us!

If you are a Susan Stoker fan you know the saying "this book is her best yet". Well I'm telling you Defending Morgan is her best yet. Oh my goodness there were times that I laughed historically and other times I was ugly crying. I absolutely loved the chemistry between Archer and Morgan. Susan pulls you right into her books as if you are one of her characters. The Mountain Mercenaries series has become my favorite series.

3.75 stars--DEFENDING MORGAN is the third instalment in Susan Stoker’s contemporary, adult MOUNTAIN MERCENRIES romantic, military, suspense series focusing on a group of six former soldiers and Navy SEALS who call themselves Mountain Mercenaries, headed by the mysterious ‘Rex’. This is former Navy SEAL Archer ‘Arrow’ Kane, and apiarist (bee keeper) Morgan Byrd’s story line, DEFENDING MORGAN can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary. NOTE: The Mountain Mercenaries is a spin off from the author’s Ace Security series but you do not have to have read the previous series to understand or follow the current timeline. The Mountain Mercenaries were first introduced in CLAIMING FELICITY (Ace Security 4). WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be some triggers for more sensitive readers. Told from dual third person perspectives (Morgan and Arrow) DEFENDING MORGAN follows in the wake of the Mountain Men’s discovery of not one but two hostages on their latest assignment. Sent to the Dominican Republic to rescue an American five-year old girl kidnapped by her father, the Mountain Men team locate and identify the child’s would be protector-twenty six year old apiarist Morgan Byrd, another American missing for close to a year. Struggling to survive Morgan and Arrow do battle with armed terrorists and civilians in an effort to escape, and return safely to America. Upon their return Arrow becomes Morgan’s guardian and protector in an effort to ferret out the person(s) responsible for the attack against the woman with whom he is falling in love. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Morgan and Arrow, and the potential fall-out as the Mountain Mercenaries begin to uncover the depths to which someone is willing to destroy Morgan, and the man that she loves. Morgan Byrd had no idea as to the who or why of her kidnapping, imprisonment and on-going sexual assaults. For close to a year, our heroine battled between life and death in an effort to survive or withdraw from the continuing violations and onslaught. Determined to protect the young girl now imprisoned along side her, Morgan bears the brunt of their kidnappers’ aggression and anger. Arrow Kane’s overwhelming urgency to protect Morgan Byrd is visceral and real. His immediate attraction is countered by Morgan’s need to heal both emotionally and physical, healing that involves patience and time. The relationship between Morgan and Arrow begins as an assignment but Arrow makes it his personal mission to protect and guard the woman with whom he will fall in love. Like all of Susan’s heroes the attraction is instantaneous; he knows that the woman is his HEA. The $ex scenes are limited due in part to our heroine’s need to heal and recover. DEFENDING MORGAN is a story of family, betrayal, vengeance and love. The premise is intriguing and entertaining; the romance is passionate; the characters are colorful and energetic. I guessed the person responsible early on in the story; I suspect the identity of the mysterious Rex; but I had issues with the number of times the hero calls the heroine ‘beautiful’, Arrow uses beautiful as a form of endearment ninety (90) times throughout the story line-a bit redundant, repetitious and excessive.

Susan Stoker does it again. Another great story that I didn't want to put down. I absolutely loved it. Morgan was a strong woman that had a lot to overcome after her abduction and subsequent rescue, I adored her because she did her best to not let things get her down even if there were some bumps on the road. Arrow was determined to do what he needed to do for Morgan, even if it hurt him. The story as a whole was great, and I was surprised by the “villain”. I love this series and can't wait to find out who Rex is (there's finally explanation of why he organized the Mountain Mercenaries, so Yay!!), let alone get the stories for the other guys.

When the rescue of an abducted child, leads the team of mercenaries to discover a woman who's been missing for over a year, the mission becomes more than they planned for. Morgan Byrd has been through literal hell since she was kidnapped, but discovering that someone has been paying to keep her alive and in another country, has her questioning everyone close to her. "Arrow" Kane feels protective of Morgan and those feelings quickly develop into a strong attraction that he can't fight, but the danger of who's behind her abduction must come first. Defending Morgan is fast-paced, heart breaking at times, but a wild ride I didn't want to end!

This third book in the series was very emotional, as the heroine had been through a horrible trauma during her time in captivity. The hero was completely there for her, and was so swoonworthy. Archer "Arrow" Kane is a former Navy Seal. He's now an electrician in Colorado Springs. But, he's also a part of the Mountain Mercenaries. They take on missions from their anonymous boss to save women and children in peril all over the world. It's rewarding work, though dangerous, and he loves helping out where he's able. When the guys are sent out to the Dominican Republic to recover a young girl kidnapped out of the U.S. illegally by her father, they find more than they bargained for. They find a famously missing American woman who's been gone for over a year, Morgan Byrd. Arrow knows he'll do anything to get her back home safely, regardless of the fact that they weren't there for her. Morgan Byrd was snatched from a parking deck in Atlanta over a year ago, and she's been in the Caribbean ever since. Her captors have moved her from secret hovel to rundown shack and back again, on a never ending loop. They've used and abused her until she wasn't sure how much more she could take. Then, a week before, they dropped the little girl off with her, and she's been doing everything she can to take care of the girl ever since. When a group of armed American men break into the shack, she's relieved to find herself rescued, along with the child. But, there's danger yet ahead, as she still doesn't know who took her, or why. Arrow and Morgan had a connection very early on, but at first it was mostly about his need to rescue her. It morphed into so much more as time went by, and watching them fall for each other was so sweet and wonderful. Morgan was severely traumatized after her ordeal, and she was putting the work in with therapy to get herself back on track. It was a struggle, but she was determined to be herself again, and I truly admired her tenacity. Arrow was there for her every step of the way, and made her feel like she really had the support she needed to heal. The suspense part of this story kept things hopping and I was on pins and needles the entire time. The villain here was truly psychotic, and it was so scary to think about that happening. I had sort of figured out who it was a little earlier on, but I wasn't completely sure until the reveal. The reveal really set up the action for the big climax of that part of the plot, and let the readers in on the crazy before the characters encountered it for themselves. All the other guys on the team are awesome, though I think Meat is my favorite. I hope his book is coming soon! I liked that the heroine wasn't just magically cured after her horrific ordeal. She had to deal with the long term ramifications of what happened to her, and what it meant for her, and Arrow, in the future. I appreciated the way the entire thing was handled, almost as much as I appreciated the fact that everything that happened to Morgan while she was kidnapped was before we met her in the story. Full descriptions of sexual abuse of main characters are typically something I try to avoid, and I'm glad this didn't happen on the page. Just the discussions and consequences of it were enough to illustrate her trauma. I really enjoyed this story, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves romantic suspense.

This series just keeps getting better and better, which is no small feat since I've enjoyed every story so far!! Even though this is Book 3 in the Mountain Mercenaries series, I think it would stand just fine on its own. While the past characters do continue to appear throughout, not knowing their backstories shouldn't cause issues with this book. Although they are really are good!! This story starts off with a bang with Arrow on a mission to locate a young girl taken by her father only to stumble upon Morgan who was kidnapped a year ago. He certainly can't leave her behind but rescuing her certainly does present some challenges. Rescuing Morgan is only the beginning. Arrow has to help her overcome everything she has been through and keep her safe while they track down the bad guys. Jam-packed right from the start, this story drew me in and I struggled to put it down. Sleep is overrated anyway...right?

Sooo Gooood!! This story will grab you and suck you in from the first page! It is mysterious, exciting, heartbreaking and romantic! I loved how Arrow was so patient with Morgan and her PTSD. The mystery of who was the villain was captivating and and kept me guessing almost to the end. I LOVE stories like that and this was right on the money! I didn’t want it to end!!

Another incredible read in this series. It's fast paced and action packed keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole time. When the team went in for an extraction of a kidnapped young girl they were surprised to stumble upon a woman who was reported missing more than a year ago. I adored Archer/"Arrow" and I loved how protective and caring he was with Morgan. The connection between Arrow and Morgan was immediate and their chemistry jumps from the pages. While they never expected to be trying to get another person out of the Dominican Republic, Arrow is determined to get her home safe and sound. Once that is accomplished finding the person responsible for her abduction while keeping her safe becomes his top priority. You definitely want to grab a copy of this one. I highly recommend it.

Defending Morgan will break your heart and renew your faith in the healing power of love. Morgan is strong and smart and I love that Arrow saw that in her right away. I love that Arrow is patient and kind even though he is a fierce warrior. This story is a fabulous addition to the series. Make sure you have the tissues handy.

Another winner! I loved this book! The author is a master at creating characters that are both strong and vulnerable, while trapped in an impossible situation. When Morgan is kidnapped and spirited away to another country, she has no idea why, but assumes it is random. When rescuing a young child, Mountain Mercenaries stumbles across Morgan and rescues her too. In the course of her rescue, Archer is almost immediately entranced by Morgan, however, he is committed to rescuing her and keeping her safe, but this is a bit more complicated than anticipated. Archer is swoon worthy and the perfect hero, slightly flawed, but devoted to protecting women and children at any cost. I loved his relationship with Morgan and how gentle he was with her while helping her heal. When she continues to be at risk, Archer and his fellow Mountain Mercenaries jump into action to determine where the threat is coming from. This is a fast paced romantic suspense that fans of the genre will love. This one is a must read and should be at the top of your TBR list. While part of a series, this is a stand alone novel, however, the series is so good that you really owe it to yourself to read them all. The author is on my must read authors' list.

This story centers around Mountain Mercenaries’ team member Archer/Arrow Kane and hostage Morgan Byrd. While on a mission to rescue a young child in the Dominican Republic, they found a woman, Morgan, who had been missing in the USA for a year. A woman that had been kidnapped and sexually abused during her capture, and who protected the young child, Nina. with her life. Once rescued, it’s obvious that an attraction exists between Morgan and Arrow, but the road to recovery will be a long one for Morgan and even of more immediate importance , it’s discovering who had masterminded the kidnapping and why. I had some issues with the book. I felt the story was very similar to a previous book titled Protecting Fiona. At times that the writing was a little stilted , the plot was not a strong one and the characters less developed than in other stories. I found myself scanning through some of the pages to see what was going to happen next. Last but not least, even though it’s important for us as individuals to get a realistic view of the aftermath of sexual abuse, if the reader has been abused, then this story might trigger some unpleasant memories. I was entrusted a copy of this book by Netgalley and Montlake Romance. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
